Custom-built chopper cert and vin cost?

hi guys does any one know basic requirements and cost of cert and vinning custom built bikes? welding up the frame whats the story?

When I reregistered the FZR I needed to get a mechanics inspection thing, cost $380, he checked that the frame was square (not bent from the crash or anything). I would assume they are the ones who check welds etc too.

You wil need a low volume vehicle certifier. There are some in Auckland, and therme may be one in Chch. Talk to them before you start.
AFAIK, you will need a certified welder for the frame. Of course, the average Chinese scooter was welded by seagulls and that is allowed on the road...

na mate, any competent welder will be fine, the certifier will decide if its up to scratch or not.

Thats true, I spoke to a certifier about the mods Im making to my frame, he said I could do the welding but I had to use seamless tubing despite the fact that the standard parts of the frame are seamed tube

How did he come up with that ??

I suppose he is just covering his backside .... That would make just about all Japanese frames illegal

in fact are the new ones aluminium ( drawn ) welded to a cast !!! aluminium swing-arm pivot and head stock?

Hey lets build bike to the random will of a low volume certifier ,,,,,

Yeah I found it a bit over the top too cos the seamless tube has a much thicker wall ... on the positive side though there will be a lot less flex

I guess if I want him to cert it I will have to play by his rules

Flex is a function of shape , and his rules are a worry ,,, still the price difference between seamed and seamless shouldn't be that much so might as well use it

I am interested in the new frame , you've done some good work in the past

The basic frame is done, all I have to do is get the rear subframe right and I can finish the welding and gusseting, then finish bracing the swing arm. Iv done my best to keep everything straight and in line using a laser but I will get the frame checked on a jig before it goes for powder coating

This pic shows the difference in I.D. of the tubing, the wide bit of the slugs I made to join the downtubes fits inside the standard frame and the smaller diameter fits inside the new tubing, the O.D. of both tubes are the same

sorry couldnt resist the austin powers quote , that looks plenty strong , sub frame loaded with 2 people , some camping gear?? 90kg+90kg +30kg =210kg which is 144kg in the X direction and Y direction per with an fos of 2

roughly!!!

there is a couple of really good videos floating around by a guy called carvel

the guy is good , and well is well respected in the frame making business, its worth a watch , just to see how someone else does things like set up or prep

if you want I can find the torrent file or figure out another plan !

Found the info about Ron Covell but this is not a chopper Im building its a Turbo Injected Streetfighter version of the Z1300, Im up to a rolling chassis stage and Im currently building a new tank out of the original Kawasaki tank a Honda tank and some sheet steel. It looks big cos the engine is so big and looked silly when it was smaller but it has to house all the electrics, ECU and 6 ignition coils
