What to do with myself next year?

Righto, I'm in 7th form and I intend to apply as a pilot in the RNZAF next year. Have spoken to the recruiters, provided I pass the aptitude tests I will be able to attend a selection board in Sept 2010. All good, but the problem I'm facing is what to do with my time from the end of school this year to September next year.

All my mates will be off to University next year in the big cities. I was initially thinking about staying at home, working full-time for a bit and then doing a bit of a bike trip around the USA for a month. But then I realised how depressing it would be to stay in Nelson, living at home, working, away from my mates, being up to fuck-all. It would do my head in. So I need to get outta Nelson between Jan/Feb and June/July.

About me, I'm pretty academic, I ride a Honda GB250, I have my private pilots license. I need ideas for what to do with myself for the first 6 months of next year. Work experience programmes overseas, summer camps, piloting opportunities... are the sorts of things I am after. Anyone have any ideas, recommendations, or contacts that could set me on the right track?

Take what you can get because jobs are not easy to come across these days unless you're qualified at something.

Why don't you join as an airforce cadet, and then in September change over to a full enlistee?

It will gain you valuable training in your chosen career path.

Because only a small amount of applicants make it to their chosen profession in the RNZAF as a pilot...I would give some thought to what your fall back would be if you were unsuccessful with the RNZAF, and spend the next 12 months working toward that and getting some of lifes experience.

Also spend a good lot of times playing arcade computer games to help with the monkey box test in the recruitment pocess....

If I don't get selected I'll be off to Uni in 2011 to do science or engineering.

Thanks for everyone's input so far. Nelson is a nice place sure, but I feel like I wouldn't really be heading anywhere.

Maybe try and get some workplacement with a company doing your prefered branch of engineering of science....It may credit toward necessary workplacemen experience....and don't forget those arcade games....

Get a student loan for varsity you never intended to go too ! Ride around the country and ....
No just kidding that would just be wrong !!!
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

Go to uni as a full time student for one semester, you will complete some papers, meet awesome people get away from home, get a LOT of sex (ahh, first year uni sluts god bless them!!) and have some awesome experiences, and wont be isolated from your mates. and get a part time job. heaps of people complain, but student allowance with a part time job (10 or so hours a week is plenty) is quite a liveable amount!
That would be my suggestion, you wont regret it
