sump plug got me stumped..?

i went to change my oil today and i looked in the obvious place right under my engine for my sum plug and sure enough ther was a handy dandy bolt right ther in the middle, when i went to undo it it was super super tight and i couldnt get it. my dad tryed with and without an extention for the ratchet and couldnt get it, then we relised that it looked like the bolt was holding on a round plate about 2-3 inches across!

now what im wondering is, is that the sump plug?, or is the sump plug placed in a different area on the bike ?

just incase, its a 1994 (first rego'd in 1996 so says 96 not 94) kwaka zzr250.

Yup thats the filter holder, its a plate that holds the oil filter in place - You will find that this is really really screwed in well, might need a large extension or a decent torque wrench, or abit of muscle!

That bolt will be your oil filter I think and the sump plug will be at the back of the sump.
My GPZ is some thing like that and Kawa don't change much on there motors there all very similar.
I may be wrong but someone will put us right soon.They all like to help.
Anything to save money ah.

It's upside down remember, so from a seated view, this will be reversed for the sump plug.

IF IT REALLY IS THAT TIGHT TO GET OFF USE A RATTLE GUN, SOMETIMES IF A THREAD IS SEIZED IT CAN BE FUCKED UNDOING IT , A RATTLE GUN APPLIES EVEN PREASURE IN SMALL BURSTS

I know on some Kwaka dirt bikes the sump bung in on the left hand side, so that when undun it drains all the oil while sitting on the stand, the bolt you are tying to undo is the filter cover, i have found the easy way to get them off is to run the bike till its HOT then get a realy cold sponge and aply it to JUST the filter cover, in my past experiances i find that this works so well you can almost undo it with ya fingers.

Mount the sump plug in a vice and rotate the bike around the plug - this gives more leverage and puts the weight of the bike to work for you....just a tip from an old hand....

im not sure if i was going the right way...hmm. but im gona try taking the left hand fairing off and see if the plugs there.

Woah!! dont need to go pulling off your fairings to change the oil!!

You have found your oil filter, the plate holds in the filter and a bunch of oil seals and springy retainer bits that need to go back in the way they came out! (all the oil must be drained before this bolt is removed or youy will end up with a big mess on the driveway and warm oil all down ones freakin sleeve....... lucky it was too tight to undo aye?!?)

The sump/drain plug is mere cm's in front to the starboard side of the bike, same size and all i think..... any ways remove this and drain the oil into a sealable container then take it to be disposed of properly.....
Sounds like the filter bolt will need a bit of convincing but a bit of force and some clever tools and you will be away laughing.

are you doing a full service? i found some duoflow?!?! after market filter foam, way better flow and heaps cheaper than a kawa replacement!! platinum plugs will result in cleaner, smoother, more efficiant running, as i have better hookups for carparts than bike bits at the mo, its convenient that ZZR's run the same plugs as a Toyota Rav 4, C8 -HSA (platinum) NGK.

hmm come to think of it, tis nearly that time for mine "again!!, that will be next pay packet i think, todays is goin on a set of pirellis and a front end overhaul ( replace fork seals, thicker oil and spacers to stiffen the springs, ah and a wheel bearing......gunna be a fun ride home tonite!!!))

wait, you don't need to take the fairing off. The sump plug is just another bold behind and slightly to the side of the round plate/filter cover thing. Same sized bolt too, I think.
At least that's how it is on '91 zzr250's. I don't think they've changed it.

I've still got a few old containers of the stuff, some are left over from when dad used to work on the car, and I don't know what to do with it.

take it to you local friendly mechanic! they have people come take it from them and do the "right thing" with it... turn it into something?!?!?

Auckland city council runs the 'hazmobile' service. There is a site out there somewhere ( www.hazmobile.co.nz maybe? ) which lists where and when they will be doing pickups. Pop along and give 'em your hazarous and nastys for free.

not to worry folks. but i sure found out the hard way with taking my fairing off...never nedded too. but i found the sump plug. got the oil out and then replaced it with nice new clean stuff. i will be getting a full service hopfully at my next wof next month so ill get a new filter then and more oil!

hmm not usually advisable/much use atall to change ones oil without changing the filter!!?! filters are cheap, like 10 bucks or sumthin, less than the oil anyway. and the oil will stay good for a whole lot longer!
