The weather gods decided to play dirty for most of the day.
The riders were all informed that their choice to ride or not was theirs and that their decisions had to be based upon their accepted skill level, the fact Zimmer is a big bike which they'd never ridden and, finally, that bugging out due to the conditions was in no way cowardly, in fact it demonstrated good self control. Better yet, AMCC agreed they could come back for the next ART day at no further charge. How good is that?
Anyway, one decided to come back. Another rode his own bike for one round then decided it would be safer to come back. The third damned near gave me a heart attack.
He was first out on Zimmer in G1. The chequered flag came out and I waited, and waited, and waited for the rider to come into the pits. No show. "Oh shit! He must have gone down." That had me running around looking for a track-marshal with a radio.
'Nope. Nobody's gone down.'
'Well where the hell is he?' I wondered.
Turns out that a line marshal had worked with the rider for a few laps, followed him into the pits then suggested he may as well go out with G2, which was one hell of an accolade for a rather young, first time trackie. And so he did.
Down came the rain. The youngster asserted he could hack it, so with some misgivings I let him go again.
I needn't have worried. This young man is rather unique. Not only does he listen to and absorb everything he is told, he follows instructions.
Later a senior instructor asserted he had been watching this young man and was very pleased with the way he handled the conditions.
He's a good kid, Steve. You must be proud of him.
And so, Zimmer will return on 15th November for the other two to have a fair crack. Let's hope the weather is better.
Thanks AMCC. As usual, a superbly run day.
