Coming back from a big injury?

Have you returned to riding after a long layoff ? be it road or dirt.
Would love to hear your storys and share thoughts from like minded
people who have tuffed it out and overcome your fears and gone back racing/riding and why you never chucked in the towl .

First and foremost , i love bikes full stop and thats why i am back on them
myself, trouble with me is i love to race and yes im having that itch again that needs scratching but its tuff trying to get the wife to understand and for good reason , i had not broken a bone in 10years, great run, but this time i lost my long term job becuse off it . Then theres overcoming the fear, but i no i can over come that in time i have faith in my ability to race good again , i have had good success in the past on dirt, but its a tuff call . maybe track days will have to do it ? Enough about me thou ,id love to hear how you overcome all these things to return to the track , dirt or road?

Can I please borrow people's experiences that are recorded in this thread for a Kiwi Rider Blog?

    Cheers

    Sure!

I've raced on and off for years...both moto-x and tar. Raced at Wanganui more times than I can remember. Had a nasty biff in '05'...and mashed my right ankle so badly that it looked for a while like I was gonna lose the foot.

I didn't...and even if I had've...I'd still be riding. Just had some corrective wrist surgery too...but I've taken delivery of a new 2010 RMZ 450...and think I'll do both off road and some rr on it.

Can't keep away. The good times have well out weighed the bad...despite hospital food sucking arse.

Can someone tell me how to 'stretch' a set of leathers???

Mate...I've dined at Wellington, Lower Hutt, Palmerston North and Wanganui Hospitals...one in Brisbane too. It's all shite! Fucking unreal care though.

Injuries affect everyone differently mate...don't worry about it if you're feeling a tad apprehensive...take your time and simply have fun. Anyone tells you to HTFU...tell 'em to eat shit.

How does that saying go ? Something about sliding sideways into the grave going wooohooo what a ride !!!

Up to you what ya want ! Ppl telling ya to HTFU will do as much good as ya Mrs telling ya to look after yrself (not that she would)
Sounds to me your already back into it, trackdays aren't all that much safer than racing !
Or is the dirt where ya want to be ?
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

I wrote off my first Tiger earlier this year. Broken ribs, shoulder, my right hand looked very unusual and my left had a 1/2 inch hole in it. Three nights in hospital, and the recovery is ongoing. My hands are still stiff and my shoulder makes funny noises. Trying to sleep was hell for the first 6 weeks and the painkillers caused hallucinations - not pleasant

I was determined to get back into it and three weeks after the crash I went pillion on Chanceyy's Bandit after I bandaged myself up. It was great! After that I pillioned on Monamie's Buell and loved it. Before the pins were taken out of my hand I just used an oven glove and rode my Daytona. Couldn't keep away from it and I was just more careful than usual.

I'm still cautious on the quicker rides now because I don't want to go through that again and apart from the injuries I sure as hell don't want to write off another bike!
It's only Rock and Roll but I like it

I've done the dreaded pelvis and femur. Not nice.

    Things I learned:

Listen to every expert you can. Read up about it on the web.
Know what is involved in your recovery and do what your told from experts you trust- if a physio says do it every hour, do it every hour.
Set goals that are reasonable in your recovery.
Don't push too hard, listen to your body.
Only take pain medication if you really, really need to, because you can't listen to your body if everything is numb.
Harrang ACC for everything you can get, they won't give unless you ask.
If you have limitations due to your condition, find ways around them, you've got all day to come up with a solution.

    Best of luck

ive quoted your post cuse thats about where im at, road or dirt?
i love both , and the 3 track days ive done were great, and somethink i always wanted to do but i spent years and a lot of coin improving my mx riding to a solid level and its a bitter pill to swollow leaving it there after
a focus error on my behalf and my worst crash in 20 years . I looked forward to turning 35 so i could race vets and leave these young guys to them selfs , now ill be 38 in march with all of two rides in vets under the belt . Ive got nothing to prove to any one else and i had a mint run injury free but if anything id like to prove to myself that im strong enough to put it behind me and ride dirt again to be honest id love to go back and cut some laps around there just to get the monkey off the back.
