    Question Region Structure

Currently under "New Zealand Regions" we have the major regions for NZ, along with "North Island" and "South Island".
Some articles, like tours, more rightly belong under the Island than a particular region in an Island.

When creating articles that belong to a specific region, such as Auckland, is there an intention that it should also be added to the larger region, "North Island" - so that an Island is inclusive of everything listed in every region of that Island?
If so, then should we consider making "Auckland" a sub-category of "North Island" instead, to save the double listing of most articles?

Category criteria, such as regions, are problematic for the reasons you've just outlined and particularly so when having a "region" is a mandatory field. There are KB forums that have this functionality and it's sometimes a pain in the arse and adds no value whatsoever.

e.g. somebody in Auckland wanting to get to Manfeild or post stuff about a Manfeild event other than the event itself says this is in "Auckland" because that's where their community of interest lies.

e.g. an event that covers more than one region, like for instance, a Grand Challenge or Capital 1,000km event, or where the venue borders more than region.

If there is a view that having region-based tags adds value, then there needs to be a system that allows exceptions to be dealt with easily and efficiently.

Conveniently, the Wiki allows an article to be in multiple regions at the same time.

So you can place something in both the "North Island" and "South Island" at the same time. An example might be a company that runs north and south Island tours.

Just add them to as many regions as necessary.
