    Check your helmet carefully.

So, had a bit of an off a few days ago.

I didn't remember hitting my bonce more than "just a tap" as I stopped against the bike, I looked over the helmet, and there wasn't a mark on it. So, sweet I thinks got away with it.

Tonight I thought I should take a closer look, outside it is in perfect condition like new. Inside all looked good too, then I took off the covers, cursory examination looked fine. But.. wait, what's that.

Ruddy great crack right through the foam above the left eyebrow, 10cm long. It's a helmet with an integrated visor and the gap between shell and foam for the visor is where it's cracked.

    Bastard.

So, lesson all, even if it looks all good, pull the lining and have a look see.

Always consider a helmet a one use item. Looks like it did it's job.

Consider that this may have been there for some time. Not a nice thought is it.

I'd disagree, cracking isn't really the best way of behaving in a crash. A crack is not absorbing energy.

As for one use... for any decent impact or rash of .course one use, once the foam has compressed (or cracked), write off.

But I'm not a throw the helmet away nazi, helmets are designed to take serious amounts of punishment. If this hadn't been cracked, I'd have had no problem keeping it.

It would have to have been there since it was shipped to me in that case. Which isn't entirely impossible. And I'll be very carefully inspecting the replacement when it arrives.
