Well, I grew up in the Naki, moved to Kaitaia for 7 years and then moved to Whakatane 15 years ago. Out of all these places, I absolutely love Whakatane! It's close enough to the big centres, 2 hours to Taupo track, It has a MX track 20 minutes away, Pocket Bikes at the Edgecumbe Kart Track first weekend of every month, you're right on the beach, so there's plenty of opportunities for fishing and diving, rivers galore for white-baiting, hunting is a hop skip and a jump away, 2 1/2 hours to the snow, lakes just half an hour away for summer water skiing.... the list goes on and on....

The Naki will always be home to me, but I love it in the Eastern Bay

    Hey! fuck off!

Whakas and the eee-bop has been the best for us. We'll stay here for a while yet. Everything is nearby and the people are relaxed and friendly. I wouldn't mind a few more business opportunities, but thats all. If you like the outdoors its great.

If one is looking at setting up a business then Kawerau council is the easiest to work with whereas Whakatane is one of the worst in the country close to Rodney council in pigheadedness. EBoP is a fantastic place to work live and play as has already been stated in previous posts.

What trade or work do you want, farming, Kiwifruit, Fitter welder/turners, sparkies trades people generally find work with the trades associated with the mills in Kawerau. Work is generally word of mouth as in most places and door knocking cold calling will find some job if one is not fussy about what they do.

Unless its a food business, then whakas is great and the kaw inspector is a fucktard.

Kawerau would be a daft place to set up a business selling to consumers. Even the paper mill there is on borrowed time in a sinking market. The only reason kawerau council is desperate to get businesses in town, is because they are slowly going down the toilet. Don't do it. Different story if you only need to rent space and sell elsewhere - that's going to be dead cheap.

Whakatane on the other hand is growing at a startling rate. Whole new areas of the town are appearing.
