    Alarm Installation (mongoose MCA500)

    Hiya Folks/Folkets/Gnomes,
This weekend I've decided to give the alarm installation a go - I got the alarm when I bought the bike (http://www.mongoose.com.au/product.act?ProductID=64), now I'm a little concerned about the difficulty - and am thinking that I may be able to do it due to my electronics background, now my main question is, where should I mount the siren and 'black' box, I was thinking under the tank - beside the airbox and rectifier?

Anyone got any tips for me, I'd love some

I have the same alarm. I have the siren underneath the pillion seat where there is usally room for a couple of tools and a stubbie or two. I have the black box mounted slightly foward of there near my bikes ECU. As for fitting it, persoanlly I wouldn't recommend it without a good electronic background. I got mobile alarm specialist in hamilton to fit mine and THEY ARE FUCKING HOPELESS. They have wired it up incorrectly numberous times so that the bike can start in gear which the alarm is supposed to make impossible for obvious reasons. Needles to say that there crap work has cost hundreds of damage to my bike from falling over. Of course they wont pay for that damge though... FUCKING WANKERS!

Rant over, hope there was some useful info in there. I see your in Whanga's. I'm from there myself...

Also one question - do you have the alarm seat switch under the pillion seat?

OT - Yea whangarei, just one of those real.. interesting places

nah i haven't got that switch thing on the seat, fockers never fitted that either. When it's working it has got good "wank" value though. Especially starting a loud TL in front of little children as they walk by and girls etc...

Oh and the remotes are very good, have excellent range and very waterproof. I have been body surfing with remote in my boardies, just dried it out and in goes sweet, rust and all!

I'd say that it would be easy to install bar the remote start which is when things get tricky. Maybe not so bad onl your bike, but my alarm also has to bypass the need for the clutch to be pulled in to start the motor, as well as supposedly not starting in gear.

    Good luck

Yes, I just remebered that my bike wont start in gear unless the clutch is in anyway so I can hook up the remote starter which is cool!

Yes I was wanting to fit it to impress some ladies while I'm having a coffee and let my sewing machine start by itself, or hide and start it when people are near it (now that would be funny!).

yes you could fit that switch its real simple one cable and a bit of drill work I can get you a copy of the wiring diagram if you would like?

"overton" - as in water sporter man :P Well I did surf abit (disgracefully when I was in auckland with some mates), but I lurrrve wakeboarding that I can do (Y)

Dont try this at home yourself.. unless you know what your doing its easy to fuck up.
Mine has the mongoose alarm too.. there great.
Also the remote start is hooked up so it is impossible to start it in gear.
Sadly to far away, the guys up hear say that it will take more than a few hours (mainly just dont want to do it I figure), and since its going to have no effect on my insurance premium - I just hope I dont stuff anything up..

edit: what sort of things could I stuff up? I'm going to get a multimeter tommorrow so as I can check everything as I go so I'm sure that it isnt the wrong wire etc.

And I'm getting paranoid leaving the bike out in the open all day now, I only feel safe when its in the garage... with the door double locked.

I've got the same alarm, friend who owns a car stereo installation shop put it on for me. I actually find the siren to be a bit quiet, but otherwise its a good unit. Unless they've changed you have to buy a mercury switch for the tilt switch function if yuo want it. It is handy to have as if you remote start the bike as soon as someone moves it upright the engine is killed. Also good to freak people out as they lean over the dash to see the 'max speed'...

I learnt once about leaving it in gear and using the remote start function. End of the day at work, bike is parked on the sidestreet outside work which has a decent cambered layout. I had only just fitted the alarm and was showing off, hit the starter and watched the bike 20m away jumping up and down on the sidestand, the back wheel just skipping around!! It was actually idleing for about 10 sec in gear on the stand while I fumbled the remote to kill the engine. Never made that mistake again...

I have fitted two of those alarms - it is not too hard for anyone with a basic understanding of electrics, just takes time but well worth it. I suggest you do not bother with the remote start feature - it is just a gimmick as far as I am concerned and I don't see the point in it (apart from the fact that my 996 will not start anyway with stand down). With these alarms you can get also get an optional remote pager (which I have installed on one bike and works good).

Thanks for the replies, Interesting story there onearmedbandit

Et al, thanks for that I hope it will be simple enough for me.. lol

I just finished putting sealant around all the cracks to make sure I dont get any water in there, because I'm still thinking about where to mount it, and they dont have a decent washer on the joints in these little buggers...

Forgot to mention that I also recommend you fit a tilt switch (mercury switch) which is readily available from Dick Smith.
