NZ Police are very very restrained.
While I am sometimes critical of the Police on other issues, I am always quietly proud of the way they deal with situations like this without the water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets so popular in other parts of the world.
Good on the Police here, prosecute the troublemakers, make sure it costs them heaps, and make sure thay dont get diversion or get let off the hook.
David must play fair with the other kids, even the idiots.
Whats the problem with the undie 500? Like a girl on the news said: They wouldn't be throwing bottles at the cops if the riot police weren't there in the first place

'96 - 99 were pretty quite as far as the Undie 500 was concerned, I lived on Castle Street then while studying. In fact if I remember rightly we had some damned good parties, but then again if they were that good I was probably drunk so not sure if my memory is right.
But what I do remember is the drive-bys of the cops, everyone kinda calmed down for the 5 minutes it took for them to get a look and make sure everything was OK.
Now it seems like its throw the riot gear on and shut them down regardless ... they are just young adults trying to have some fun, but i guess we forget that somewhere along the way
This whole 'rebellion' thing of 18-21 year olds has been going on since there were 18-21 year olds funnily enough ... my fathers favourite story of a night on the piss with his older brothers has them locking an off duty cop in the boot of the vauxhall and doing 70mph down Oreti beach hitting as many bumps as they can. Its the same as the Undie 500, just a different colour so to speak.
OLD FART ALERT - Go and get yourselves a cardigan each and a Toyota Prius.
I'll look after your bikes for yahs
That was the thing, when I was living there we cleared out anything we didnt want to get broken/damaged. My car usually spent the weekend in the free parking down by the railway station, TV went to the girlfriends house, pool table to my uncles ... we KNEW it was undie 500 weekend, we prepared for it.
a few windows were always broken, loss of a door handle here and there, but we fixed them up on monday and carried on with our studies. Maybe we were sensible students, but youd have to say the whole damned street was if that was the case ... and being 10 years older I don't think I could honestly say the exists a street completely full of sensible 18-21 year olds in the world let alone Dunedin ...
