Honda SL 125 SL 100 help please

I'm looking at buying one of these as a do-up project for my sons and I - a bit of father/son bonding during the spannering and also riding stages. They both want to gain some more mechanical knowledge.

The bike will not be concours, but it will be a frame up restoration. Initially I want strong motor/gearbox, good brakes and the things that influence handling - shocks, forks, bushes etc - to be spot on. I'm going to use plastic bodywork so the bikes are very usable by a couple of beginners (i.e. it won't matter, bike-wise, if they arse off).

I've chosen either of this model because of past links to them, and I think the whole project could be fun. Also, I don't want to take on a very complex project as my first. The boys and I are also keen to do a photo/text thread on here as we progress.

Question: What are parts like for these bikes? Engine blocks, oversize pistons, rings, bearings, gearbox bits etc. I will get onto Honda next week but thought I might ask on here whether there are any members with info who might be able to help out.

    Thanks

They are getting attention from collectors now and prices are on the up so be careful.

Mechanically most stuff can be sorted but it's things like tanks and exhausts and seat bases that will cost big bucks. If you want to make it road legal buy a complete one as a lot of them got stripped into dirt only bikes and lost the lights, indicators n such. Again, expensive to replace!!!!

What Paul said, I had one when I was an apprentice, many of the mechanical parts are common to the same era CB 100 and 125.
Main problem with my ones was cams flogging out the head...
    Later ones are better/different.
My son has a XR 100... PM me if you want to try one out, I live near Waikaraka Park...thats where I tought my boys to ride.

As for bonding time....good it you can compete with X Box and the PC..

    Many thanks.

Voltaire - I am pretty familiar with the SL as I raced a stocker (with the addition of a CR 250 rear shock - which looked really cool and worked well). Got 2nd on the Hare & Hound at Woodhill in about 1935 - still have the trophies so I thought it would be a cool project.

Cool, good luck with the project. 1935.....it seems like that sometimes.
I used to get my parts from Kingsland Honda.....and they are still there .... sort of) no EFTPOS and hand written receipts.
