    Gore biker down (12 September)

    http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/top-sto...rcyclist-dies/

A Southland man is dead following a motorcycle crash in Gore.

Police believe the 35 year-old was riding his bike south on Wentworth Street, when he failed to negotiate an uphill bend and collided with a fence.

The man was thrown onto the side of the road where he was found by members of the public early this morning. Police say he was not wearing a helmet. Scene examinations are being carried out today, and the matter has been referred to the coroner.

    ************************************************** *******

condolencies to his family but for him nothing he should of known better, fuk i hope he didnt have kids, makes me so mad, everyone thinks there so good and then you get a rude awakening, stay well inside your skill zone and dont be a dick and try to show off. just enjoy the day/ride.

no helmet no wonder bikers are paying higher ACC levies and get agro from the police. just like all the dickheads riding round in jandels and shorts and t-shirts i lost count this week how many i saw, i wouldnt want to be a witness to one having a bin, and uncle of mine many years ago ground his elbow allmost all the way through in a bin, he must of slid a good 30 to 40 metres, mind you he was going some, but it cost him his arm.

Failed to negotiate - they say that like you are trying to make some sort of deal with the road. It's saddening how many people get the wrong end of the bargain.

And that's the common issue. You might get away with it 999 times, and because of that you think the risk is acceptable and you can handle it, but that next time is your last.

At least only he was directly injured, but yes, his poor family.

Yeah, it's sad. So is spelling Gore like that - if you spell it how the locals pronounce it, it's "Grore".

    Wrrd.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

But, hang on - we don't know what happened.

It may not have been his fault.

I'm guessing the full story will never be known. The rider could have been dodging an oncoming car, overtaking a car in their lane, swerving to avoid an obstacle like an animal, trying to avoid something in the corner (like oil) that they had just spotted, got a flat tyre, mechanical failure, or any other number of a million things.

The helmet could have saved their life. Who knows. Nothing is certain. But if the helmet had saved their life the riders family would not be having to deal with the grief they now have to.

Putting on a helmet would have been such a small thing to do to potentially save the terrible grief of the riders family - even if they did consider the risk of not wearing a helmet acceptable, and that they were only risking their life.

As with most "accidents" ... it is not the one factor that causes an accident. Multiple factors that combine to create a bigger problem. And then the "what if's" start ... if he did ... or ... didn't ... do that... or this ...

as hes already dead, theres not much to be gained by saying he may have done wrong. unless one of us was there and saw what happened, the truth shall never be known.

    RIP rider.

Yay! Nothing like a biker down conjecture thread.

erm ACC will pay upto 8 thousand for his funeral expenses i am sure that is the rate, might be less but i am sure that ACC payout to family on death towards costs.

as per the ACC web site they cover you for death,

What about injuries that cause death?
ACC provides financial cover when someone dies as a result of an accident, a work-related disease or infection, suicide or medical treatment.

If a member of your family is fatally injured, and ACC receives confirmation that the cause of death is a physical injury, we will work with you and/or your advisors and friends to work out what assistance is available.

Various payments are available, depending on your circumstances, to cover such things as funeral and childcare costs. Dependent partners and children may be eligible for weekly compensation.

ACC support applies regardless of life, funeral or other insurance policies that may also provide protection in the event of the death of a family member.
