The 08 Burgman 400. Impressions so far

Well ..... Since the 16th, I've now done about 250 miles on her ... and she is bloody marvelous !!! I'm trying to remember when I have had so much fun, on any other bike I have owned previously ..... or ridden for that matter.

I am that impressed with this beast.

It is very comfortable for me, either feet forward, or down in front. It feels very light, very easy to handle, has great balance and excellent handling. The brakes are great, as in very progressive with plenty of feel.
On top of that, it's so practical. No gear changes to think about. The CVT works really well. It has storage for Africa, especially with the top box on it. It is ready to go for touring, without any need for further storage. This means everything is locked up on your bike when you leave it to go and look at stuff, have a coffee, etc. That's a bonus for touring!

Mine has MPH and miles travelled, rather than KPH and K's travelled. It means that it must be a USA model or similar, rather than made for the NZ market, even though it was bought new from Colemans in Auckland.
If I could change anything, it would be this speedo display.

I ran the first tank of petrol dry, which gave me a distance of 219 miles. I had got myself a small plastic 5 litre tank which I carried under the seat, just so I could see how far I could get. It equated (according to the readout) that I got 59 miles per gallon, which will probably improve as it gets further run in.

So yeah ..... I'm very happy with my decision to buy the Burgman 400.

So far I have had no left hip/lower back pain when I finish a ride, which I was experiencing with the 80kg heavier Suzuki C50 cruiser (which I rate as a very, very good bike!). It means I can carry on enjoying riding, which is great !!

That readout is in 'mercin gallons, which are (obviously) smaller. It's also wildly inaccurate.

Your petrol consumption will get better with more miles on it. Mine used to do 70 - 75 mpg, two up, on 98. We used to sit it between 120 and 130km/h on the motorway.

If you knock out the blockage in the airbox, that'll help it breath better.
It's only when you take the piss out of a partially shaved wookie with an overactive 'me' gene and stapled on piss flaps that it becomes a problem.

Yes true ... that would be in a meracin gals. I hadn't thought about that.

Is there a write up somewhere on 'unblocking' the airbox ? I guess it will probably be better to wait until after its done 1000 miles or so, before considering that.
I have only put regular in it. I thought that was what they ran on ..??
    Cheers.

There's probably a write up on the burgman forum. I don't have the link.. it's gayer than a puff with two arseholes. They're american.. and half the posts thank their imaginary friend for their own endeavors. Frankly, awful.
Easier to follow your own nose. Take the top off the airbox in the obvious way. Locate the blockage at the inlet. Knock out with a long screwdriver and mallet. Small plastic weld at each side. Five minute job.
As standard, they feel like the airfilter is blocked.. which it isn't. It's just strangled a bit.

I run everything on 98. It's only a couple of sheckles extra per tankful.

Thanks Dave, I'll have a look around on the web. I don't know my way around these scoots at all yet, but I believe its quite a mission to take the tupperware bits off. I don't know where the air filter is located on the scoot yet, but will find my way around eventually.

And yeah ... I have no issues about paying more for higher octane, but wasn't sure if it makes any difference to the running at all on these. I wasn't told by the dealer, which grade to use. I think the manual says to use regular.
On my C50, I always used the higher octane, as it was recommended for that motor.
    Cheers.

Yeah I am pleased with my choice. They are fun to ride, and handle way better than I imagined.

I will be getting plenty of miles on her, as quick as possible, as I'm real keen to be able to open that throttle !!!

I'm looking at replacing the stock screen already. It seems the Givi screen is the one to go for .......

Anyone bought one locally ? (or from overseas).

Where from ? .... and how much did you pay ?

I see you need to buy the screen and a fitting kit.

    Cheers

    Motomail - $220 for both.

Colemans should be able to get you one cheaper than that.
