    Chappy's round 4 - day to forget

    Chappys Rnd 4 report,

I was really excited to go out on long track again!! Also after getting the bike back to beautiful nick I was happy that my foot and hand were nearly 100% recovered.

Apart from the “find the non oiled line” through the hairpin, the track was in good nick. Qualifying in Posties didn’t really work for most competitors… I was lucky to get away at the front and push early. Then again in the restart with clubman’s ( which was a bad plan ) I fought my way through to the front before again it was cut short. Happy with the result of 1st in Posties and 1st in F3, doing a 2:05 only 3 secs off my best on an old rear tyre and riding through the oily stuff.

    Race 1 Post Classics

I got a very good start and tagged in behind S Donnelly, I began to push in lap 2 and caught him but decided against going for broke to get in front. I backed off and enjoyed the ride home, happy to place 1st in JNRs.

    Race 1 Formula 3

Had an average start, a few pro twins and Nick took off – I kept my head down but started to struggle with rear end grip. Full credit to nick he rode really well!! My tyre was on day 2 of its life and I had realised it wasn’t going to last AT ALL. I rode home placing 2nd knowing I could go a lot faster with some tweaks, but I really needed a new rear tyre!!

Over lunch we decided to change my rear spring – go a bit harder. Rob did a great job and it took only half an hour to do a complete change and setup.

This is where my day turned bad……………………..

    Race 2 Post classics

I lead the field out and made it to the hairpin, on exit the bike began to die.. then it was dead. Stone dead. I pushed it to the sideline and managed to watch my younger brother win the race. I asked the marshals if they were going to pick me up…. she replied they would after the next race… I shouted back “I’m racing after the next race!!” I had to run my bike back… man its hard to push a bike in full kit!

We raced back to the pits – and checked everything we could – the bike had power just no go. checked fuses and fuel filters. After 5 attempt at starting it we relented – it was 2nd call for F3 and it looked grim. My Brother Aj said “do you wanna ride my bike?” lucky that he has a ZXR444, very similar to mine just missing allot of the nice fruity bits such as Ohlins suspension and Flat slide carbs. A change of transponder and changing the shifter pattern back to road trim and off I ran to the dummy grid.

    Race 2 Formula 3

I actually got a good start, CV carbs are alot nicer to ride with but lack allot of punch, I then noticed the ¼ turn of free play in the throttle….. Average!! I just wanted to bring the bike home, a couple of bikes passed me – I managed to run around doing 2:09’s placing 5th at the finish. Happy to be able to ride, and very happy that it was the first ever ride let alone race on his bike.

Overall I placed 3rd in F3, amazing! And 8th in Post classics even thou I missed out on half of the meeting!

I am looking forward to a near rear tyre and a new meeting, hopefully one without any DRAMA! We found that when we removed my rear shock the fuel pump wiring unplugged – so she simply ran the carbs dry. We got home I found the wire, I plugged it in it started up straight away…..

Many thanks to everyone who tried their darndest to get my machine up and going again, and special thanks to AJ for giving me his machine, without it my hopes in F3 would have been over.

I will be out for the practice day to make sure my new ram air box is working right....whoopss did i say that out loud??

Perhaps ill qualify up the front next round and we can slug it out.22nd was fun but front row is more ideal for a good finish.Ill bring my multi meter and give you a hand to keep her going since im a sparky.I could smell a disconnected fuel pump circuit as I went past.

Cool, could you show me the racing lines and pace me for a few laps before you disappear into the distance.
I will need all the help I can get if I'm gonna keep up with the Mossy Man.

Good to hear that it was nothing serious with your bike.
I look forward to racing you again. Be gentle.

If you find a little box strapped onto the back of your rear sub-frame, it is a Peter Brock harmoniser, he used it on his race cars.
    It's not my transponder, honest.

Hope those parts are within the Postie rules
Good report Neil, the championship is yours. Did you read the new F3 rules to take effect next year.

The machine must retain the appearance of the original motorcycle. Paint and trade advertising are not restricted.

4.3 Twin cylinder four strokes shall be limited as follows:
    a) Up to 500cc, no restrictions apart from fuel as above.
    b) Over 500cc, two valves per cylinder are restricted to 750cc and fuel as above, over
    640cc must not be water-cooled.
    c) Over 500cc three or more valves per cylinder, are restricted to 650cc and fuel as above.
Additionally these machines must retain the standard OEM air box/cleaner assembly in its entirety, air filter and element and carburettor (with the exception of removable jets or throttle body, including injector).

    Are these new rules?

But a sv650 is 645cc and 8valves so is it not eligable for f3?

Yeah, I think (b) & (c) are conflicting, but maybe they are just assuming that because in (b) they are talking about 2 vpc twins, then (c) no longer 'inherits' this rule. Seems ambiguous eh.

I thought I was just being thick, but possibly not.
