I would tend to disagree regarding the violence and the altered behaviour. My personal experience with the shit is reasonabley extensive and I didn't hear it from a prison warden or read it in the paper.

You got to admire someone that knows about endocarditis but then uses "preliminary embolism" in the same post. :-) I don't mean that in a demeaning way, it just made me smile. Could you have meant pulmonary?

And aseptic technique. In fact, a common injection practice involves licking the needle prior to injection (druggies give it a fancy name that escapes me at the moment). Essentially you are providing a carrier from one of the most bacteria laden bodily environments directly into your blood-stream. That tends to lead to septicaemia and, if treated late or not at all, death from septic shock.
