    Passed my restricted!

Finally I can take off the L plate.

It was only on for a couple of days anyway (took it off a few months back so I could go the full speed limit and not be too obvious that I was speeding).

Test was at Porirua. Was scheduled for Friday but tester was ill so had it this morning (Sat) with a stand in tester.

Ear peice was supplied, route was around titahi bay and then back through the industrial estate and towards Tawa. Finished in Tawa main street. Tester followed in a car.

Went really well. Just kept my speed to 5-10k under the limit (examiner didn't specify speed to ride at - instructions were limited to directions and pull over instructions).

No u-turn (but I think I was lucky on this as I hear there usually is). Slightly gutted that there wasn't as I had practiced it a lot beforehand.

Points that they seem to be looking out for:
    • Lane position, always try to stay in the same track as a cars drivers side tyres.
    • Awareness of any potential hazards, had a couple of dogs wandering along the path, made sure that I looked at them and reduced speed both times (so the tester new why I was slowing).
    • Road works, make sure you drop your speed again, if unsure then drop to 20kph.
    • Correct inidcation - and more importantly cancellation of indicators.
    • Head checks.

It was pretty easy in the end. But, I would definately recommend the Roadsafe advanced riding course beforehand - it pretty much teaches you all the skills you need.

So - I'm already dreaming about larger bikes now. Thinking of taking the defensive driving course which means that I can take my full just before christmas (I think my present to myself might just be a street triple, or a vfr or fz6 or new 600 hornet - just too many to choose from!)

Hope this quick write up helps anyone taking their restricted in the future. Just stay relaxed, make pronounced head checks, remember to cancel your indicators and everything else should just come naturally.

Nice writeup and good advice (apart from taking the L plate off early).

Now you can really start learning.

    Stay safe and enjoy................

Congrats on getting your 6R! I just got mine a couple of weeks ago - did test at Porirua as well although I did have to do a U-turn, luckily I had been practicing them

Ahhh I remember taking the "L" plates off! - like you LONG before getting my restricted! I just passed my Full a week ago, bought a 2004 Suzuki 1200 bandit the same day! Nothing like it, finally getting that big bike you been dreaming about for YEARS! Yeah the license test is pretty much the same in the Full but a bit longer and Definately a U turn. It comes down to common sense really, Turning the indicator is not only a must for passing the test BUT is a MUST for STAYING ALIVE! which at the end of the day is what we all strive for on our bikes! haha Nice work tho mate, take it easy out there!
