A great man passes on (Sir Howard)

The news has come through that Sir Howard Morrison has passed away peacefully aged 74. This is a sad loss of a Great man who was also a great entertainer. He will be remembered fondly by many who knew him and had come into contact with him over the years.

    R.I.P Sir Howard

I met Sir Howard a few years ago, he was a small man with a huge presence, I grew up with his records on high rotation, he was one of the greats.

My mum and her family were(those deceased)and still do play music(although in late 50's up).Mum recalled how years ago her mum was office lady in a hotel where Sir Howard,Ray Columbus,Ray Woolf and others were playing a concert. My nana was a prolific pianist and the management asked her to check if the grand piano which was moved in the hotel was in tune for the musicians.Hearing her play as he walked by was Sir Howard,he asked her to be his guest, and then called her for a duet during his session, playing the oldies from the war era etc.

In the words of Billy T - "Sir Howie the Mowie -OBE (ordinary brown entertainer)" Billy T and Sir Howie - 2 of the best entertainers NZ and the World has ever seen, can you imagine the 2 of them up there now having a catch up and Billy T telling Howie "Shit mate you got old!" - RIP SIR HOWARD!

Watched the coverage on TV news, saw how Carl Doy(pianist)played along with Sir Howard for 35 years, can remember Doy in song contest years ago.

Had an uncle who with a couple of work colleagues staying at James Cook pub in Wellington 30years ago, after the meal with a piano man playing in background(and as the room all commented playing crap)my uncle went over and was asked"any requests?",uncle replied "yep take a break" and promptly sat down to play, they ended up playing, singing till early hours for drinks lol. They found out the crappy piano player was Carl Doy.
