Build up of ??? on -ve terminal

I have a build up of ‘fuzzy shit’ around the –ve (ground) terminal on my battery.
    What is it
    What causes it
    Any suggestions on fixing it?

    For the record, a ’95 BMW F650

    Thanks
    Mac

Acid corrosion. You're best to clean it off, as it will cause conductivity problems, and will eventually eat away the terminals.

Neutralise it with some Baking Soda dissolved in water. When it stops fizzing when you brush the solution on, it is neutralised. Wipe off the mess, and then thoroughly clean the metal, with wire brush if necessary.

When reassembled, smear the terminals with some Vaseline petroleum jelly to reduce recurrance.

Don't do the clean up of the corrosion in your best jeans...

No ... perfectly normal. Petroleum jelly will prevent this for a while. Then redo.

Boil the jug and tip over it. Dont overdo it so it goes in the battery.

no....baking soda as suggested above neutralises the acid,so it doesnt corrode what you just washed it onto...Its ussually the +ve terminal that gets this in my experience
