Geek stuff MDF to ISO

Ive got an mdf file, nero wont touch, need to convert to iso, so i can burn to cd, does anyone know of how I can do this, or any free program.

There is a command-line utility called mdf2iso that I have used before but that assumes you're comfortable with using command line applications.

Otherwise the main way seems to be use a tool like daemon tools or alcohol 120% to mount it as a virtual drive then make an iso from that virtual drive with a separate utility (Magic ISO or similar).

A little bit roundabout but there ya go.

Edit: The second suggestion uses non-free applications, sorry. Magic ISO has a freeware download called Magic Disk which will mount the .mdf file as a virtual drive which should let you make an .iso from the contents using Nero.

I think ImgBurn can burn mdf files.

Actually, there should also be a mds file with the same filename...?

Why do you need an iso file. Take a backup of the MDF and burn that to disk... then just restore it at the other end???

Ok, thanks guys for all the help/ideas I had the Alcohol 120% on another machine running XP didnt think it would read on mdf file, it mounted the file no worries ran install from their,

You'll need a dual layer disc for that - something like this: http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/4ac078...ct/View/XM4395

Oh and make sure your DVD burner can write to DL discs too; check the bottom left of the front panel of your DVD burner, if it says something like "DVD+R DL", you'll be fine. Most new-ish DVD burners have DL capability I believe.

Cheers, will pick up some new disc, the reason im having all this trouble is, I built myself a new machine, decided to try vista but the hassel of trying to find programs that work with it so had to go back to my XP machine.
Trouble is it can't handle the game I just installed.

There's always the option of the windows 7 beta (or run XP until 7 is released), quite a few people I know are running that and are extremely impressed with it. I'm a Linux fan personally, but so far I've only been hearing good things.

Im self tort, with this computer thingy, thats why Ive stuck with basically what I know(XP) I install Susi 10 on a old PC just for a look see I did like it, but the thing that got me was, installing stuff, I just like to click install, the packages thing got me.

Well apart from the gaming requirement then you should give Ubuntu a try, it is a world different from most of the other flavours of Linux. Much easier to use, works right out of the box with most peripherals, websites etc. and all the extra software you need is now downloaded from the specific Ubuntu servers, already customised etc. for your particular version. You just load up Synaptic (the installer) then choose what software you want to install and hit go. Everything else (all the dependencies, versioning etc.) happens invisibly.

There are also a good selection of guides and howtos around, making it much easier to do the more advanced stuff. www.ubuntuguide.org

I got my parents computer running it and it has been hassle free ever since, I highly recommend giving it a shot...
