so the carb has fuel, it has spark, and i can feel it pumping air
checked the carb by draining it.
it just died on my friend who was using it, but it had been getting hard to start.
it has a new plug in it too
what could it be?

Hmm fuel to carb. Is carb feeding cylinder as it should? Like no blocked jets etc?
Could be you need to strip carb, clean and reassemble....

my FA50 hack had a sticking choke, squirt of brakeclean (or overpriced engine start) past the filter made it spark up every time. Whether I'd be so keen on squirting any into a bike I liked would be a question, can't imagine it is good for the seals in the long run. A little probably wouldn't hurt. The FA relished the abuse. I think it had a Catholic upbringing.
Pipe could be clogged & need a decoke.
Or it could just be rooted. That's a technical term.
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
remove the airfilter and clean/replace, just to be sure. unclog the exhaust too. (you can run for a short period with both removed to get her going with a bit of engine start)
blocked jet is the next bet - clean the carbs properly.
then check the plug is making a nice healthy spark and/or replace.
still no joy? spark timing correct?
if all else fails, it might just be rooted - check compression, invest in a new top end; easy 10 minute job on a 2 stroke and cheap too.
