Hi, it's been a very long time since i owned a bike (25years) and as my children have started school and horses are out of the question...a bike is the answer. Which begs the question...where do i start?

get a gsxr 1000 you cant go rong with one
MFSC lives on!
If you intend on road riding, and are in the Auckland region, once you have a bike I'd try going along to the Auckland Motorcycle Club (AMCC) Advanced Rider Training (ART). It's really good. Around $100 to $150 for the day.
Advanced Rider Training is on the home page near the bottom:

Failing that, try finding a club in your area that is into the same kind of riding as you want to do.

oh yeah right....first bike i rode at 14 was a gsx 1100, with my brother on the back to hold it up!!!!!!
well, riding to be free. there are some awesome places to travel around here. have many friends that ride and i have a need to join them. Licence...hehe, my learners at this stage. bike shop down the road is sorting me with lessons etc.
It's a tad embarrassing walking into a bike shop (male domain) and being ignorant. Plus i don't want some crafty salesman stitching me up with something totally unsuitable. have been asking my friends that ride and they all suggest something different then they confuse me with motorbike lingo!!!!! I am blonde!
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?
i do need a 250cc...not allowed to go higher - yet! road riding of course. did the trail riding heaps as a youngster....burnt my arse on too many exhausts pipes while struggling up steep firebreaks. so, that is out of the questions.
I just want to drive out the garage and explore.
Track days - haha...this is Nelson and there's no tracks round here lol.
ChCh/Ruapuna not that far lol.
Right....road riding. Budget? Preference for naked or full fairing? Or cruiser style?

Depending on budget you'll probably be looking for a commuter bike to start, they are easy to ride & will do what you need them to do. Then you just need to figure out the style of bike you think you would like & go get one. Go & sit on a few & see how they fit you, some are taller than others & some you sit upright while others you lean forward a bit . Try them all before you decide.
I believe a GN250 is traditional...
Redefining slow since 2006...
Naked bike = no fairings = Honda VTR250! do a goggle or search trade me very good starter bike for you!
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!
'Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out! Shouting, ' Holy sh!t... What a Ride!! '
