Servicing my bike

Just wondering how much I should expect to pay to get my bike serviced?
Is there anything in particular I should ask for?

I am a chick who pretty much knows nothing about everything when it comes to the mechanics of bikes, but I come from a car family so I am a bit mechanically minded.

Go on do it yourself,if you have done filter and oil in car,is same on bike in principle,maybe a plug,air filter,not hard to do,and what you save in labour can go towards any stuff you can't do.

Think my last service required under warranty(so had to be done by dealer)at 12000k cost about $300 included plugs,oil,filter and other items as per book(funny never checked tyre pressures,which was in book).

Hey Many, the cost of servicing will largely depend upon what needs doing.
There are diifferent service types after particular mileages.

A basic service from a main dealer is going to cost around the $200 mark.

You are in an ideal position to learn how to do it yourself. The trick will be to locate a helpful local biker who can show you the basics, like adjusting your chain and changing your oil. These things aren't complex, but there are a few bike-specific things to know to make it easier, and a few common gotchas to avoid, and few tools to purchase perhaps.

Just be careful - I gave my GSXR a oil change and the previous person had put a copper washer on the bung - which, when removed, stripped it and there I was with a bike drained of oil, so had to trailer it to the bikeshop anyway for them to put in a helicoil

But I agree, tis good thing to learn to do. At least I learnt how to do the spark plugs myself

Except this time, I always take it to the bike shop for servicing - costs around $150 -$250, depending on what needs doing. But its always a good thing to gain a good relationship with the bike shop guys too

Good luck chick - if ya lived in Christchurch, they have weekly nights for learning things about bikes - wish I was closer.......
