SH52 on a fifty year old vespa

Just back (at 6pm) from a great trip from Wellington to Pukeora (just south of Waipukurau) and back via state highway 52, on a 50 year old vespa.

Accidental detour via Bideford - and about 10km of gravel - on the way up. Lots of livestock on the road (sheep, cattle, turkeys, rabbits, ducks, hawks, magpies - dead, etc)

Made it back with 80% less braking power on the rear brake!

Would have been one of the other scooters - was a scooter rally at Pukeora. I went up Friday afternoon, came back today. Hardly any traffic at all on sh52.

Aha. In any case, as they say, on ya. I was looking longingly at everything on two wheels

Hey how'd it go Jess? Good turnout? and was the weather alright and what went down? Wanted to go but it was my wedding anniversary, so got stuck here obeying the wife. Might have enough brownie points to go next time. Hope you had fun mate.

PS, was there any Nzeta's there?
    The wife's a communist.

There was some loon on a Vespa happily pootling along SH1 today holding up a caravan!

Didn't worry us, we had a picnic and did a bit of fishing and just had a simply marvelous day...

ps Jess, I sent you an email via scootnz a while back about a mods / rocker event in wellie. is KB a better wy?

cool. how do they go over the rimutakas? I'd be scared of running too dry, oilwise, on the downhill.

The only nzeta was on the patch! We nearly persuaded Roly here in Wellington to take his...maybe next time.

I think we had the only fine weekend in October? I could be wrong - fine and sunny, though a little cold - great for aircooled engines.

More of a reunion than anything else - the venue was great, I would like to use Pukeora again. Hope they let us back there.

We had one couple who celebrated their 10th anniversary on the Saturday - had their three boys with them.

I had a little encounter with some dirt on the final turnoff (no rear brake - long story) and am a bit sore muscle wise, but glad I could get away for 3 days.

Haven't tallied numbers up yet, doing that today...had 50 registered before the rally, and more turn up on the day.

Rimutakas were 'interesting' - we went over about 4:45pm yesterday. Neither of us had full brakes by that time, and mine is only 3 speed - cornering was intense! Managed to pull over when necessary to let pulses of traffic go by without losing too much time. Zipped by the queue of cars formed after some crash past Te Marua, and then stuck together as much as possible all the way to the exit to the Old Hutt Rd. Got home bang on 6pm, after fuelling up in Waipukurau at 10:30am.

Send it again please Paul - I got one message from you, but I've been preoccupied with other stuff until Labour Weekend.
