Question All you scholars! Help! APA referencing.

Does anyone know how to refernece an Act. I'm doing a Social Policy essay and it's on the Civil Union Act 2004...how do I refence it within the essay and in my refence list?

Anyone?? None of my books on referencing have it in there!

I was just trying to figure that out the other day for an assignment I was doing on the Hunting Act. I didn't have to put it in a ref. list so I'm not too sure about that, but within the text I just wrote stuff along the lines of "in section 1 (3)b .....", using brackets only where there are brackets in the actual Act. I got the impression that that was the way to do it, but other people's advise might confirm?

Thanks hun - I'm not quoting directly from the Act in my essay but just summarising and I do need to put it in my reference list at the end.

Never learned APA and don't remember much of whichever one the states uses so I can't help. You might try asking your teacher next time you see him/her. Unless ofcourse this paper is due tomorrow then I would suggest a google search.

    (edit)
Here I just found this, it might help.

    Thar it is! (http://www.lib.uct.ac.za/infolit/apa28.html)

Yup... and a handy hint that might keep you out of trouble for a bit... don't underline the fullstop at the end of the title. It's not technically part of the title and therefore doesn't "deserve" the special emphasis the words do (having lost a mark or two on that one..)

Does anyone else out there think the APA team need therapy themselves for being so ANAL (or are they a bunch of pedants drumming up business by driving everyone mad with their rules?)

www.legislation.govt.nz will direct you to whatever Acts you may be interested in. Referencing them is a matter of style. As long as you do it consistently in a manner that doesn't confuse your readers, you should be OK. Most academic institutions have a Style Guide for published documents. The library should be able to direct you to this.

Most universities want everything referenced in a APA style.

If you want to reference the act in your assignment have a look here:

    http://www.whitireia.ac.nz/documents/2005APA.pdf

if not, just add the act to the References at the end.

This is referencing for an essay and therfore marks are involved. I couldn't find anything to do with referening on the Massy Uni Library site so I'll look at the ones you have all found.

Thanks all for your help - what a lovely bunch.

It also depends on the Department or Faculty.

This is the University of Auckland Library's referencing guide page. I'm more used to Vancouver style (numerical referencing).

There is no special method for referencing an act. Use an inline reference (act, sect 2, p.3) in your text and use a standard apa reference at the end of the doc.

    A couple of examples are:-

    Government document
    4.16 #41
National Institute of Mental Health. (1990). Clinical training in serious mental illness (DHHS Publication No. ADM 90-1679). Washington, DC: U.S. Government Printing Office.

Protection from Personal Intrusion Act and Privacy Protection Act of 1998: Hearing on H.R. 2448 and H.R. 3224 Before the House Comm. on the Judiciary, 105th Cong. 56-57 (1998) (statement of Richard Masur, President, Screen Actors Guild).

    The APA site is Here
