What really fucks me off is the controversy that the media is creating with all their stories about manholes and physics etc.

As much as I would like to disagree with the sentiments, you are absolutley right. You do not get a second chance if things go wrong.

We had our oldest dissapear in a department store when she was three. One minute she was there next she was gone. After a frantic search we found her sitting on the knee of one of the staff. It is not a nice feeling when your kid goes missing. I will never forget the feeling when we found her. Pure bliss. Daughter was happy as Larry. Did not even miss us. The shop attendant even apologised for not keeping a look out for her parents she was to busy being 'granny.' We walked right past her a couple of times but as she was down behind the counter we did not see her. From that day on when we went out our kids were 'leashed.' Never again would they dissappear.

The signs were there in the beginning - a week of unusually heavy rain, overflowing creeks, drains, ditches, she was never going to walk far, she was unlikely to go wandering uphill.... a sad, sad tragedy, condolences to the family.

And to rub salt into a very raw wound, today Housing NZ said there had been no need at all to fix the manhole as "the occupants of the property where the manhole is had teenagers living there". (Or pretty much that quote attempt).

So, don't bother even though any house could have children visiting, living next door, wandering the neighbourhood.....???? WTF?

To be honest I am stunned... Given all the rules in this nanny state such as fences around pools, regardless of who lives in the house where the pool is, etc... then it is supposed to be ok for a manhole to be open because teenagers happen to live at the property...

If they were asked to fix it and they didn't, then they are responsible for the consequences of their action/inaction.
