It's a fantastic road you just have to get past a 13km section of gravel road.. the gravel section is nearly all flat and fairly straight

We plan to ride it this weekend

Haven't been through for a while, but the gravel section is getting shorter all the time & was fairly easy going last summer.

    Cheers

Last time I went through it was easy, a bit too open for me and some bastard had sealed lots of it. An easy ride on any bike and lovely countryside.

Sorry for the epic thread dredge. Has anybody been through this area recently? If yes, what is the general condition of the road like nowadays? From what I can see on Google Street View, it looks like a fantastic bit of road.

    Here's my intended route:

Yep, I did it last weekend. Road was fine, started off with a bit of smooth well packed gravel from Marokopa end and then turns into a narrow two lane blacktop all the way to Awakino. Make time to head out to Waikawau beach/tunnel as well!

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I did that first, but the street view footage was last updated in 2010.

Cheers mate. There's nothing like first hand experience from last weekend! I'll try to give the tunnel and beach a go, time and weather permitting.

Out of interest, is there much traffic out that way? I'm assuming that it is pretty quiet.

It is pretty quiet. Also, the waikawau beach rd is very short. Do it this time as you may never do this rd again...
