Thanks for the heads up on transpro and movepro, and I wouldn't use biketranz because they're too expensive.
I've gotten quotes from two other companies now, but I'll look into Strait shipping as well because they sound like they're really cheap!

Your getting into dangerous territory using a freight company to move a bike, as a 2nd hand vehicle it is NOT covered under carriers liability & if they do get cover for it then it is for a maximum claim of $1500.00 only.
Get your own insurance but be warned that the insurance is likely to be more than the cost of transport.
If you use a specialist mover then they are more likely to have the specialized insurance you will need. Ask the question !!
The best way to move a bike is under its own power & if your doing a one way trip on it then fly back home, airfares are cheap !!

I've had a couple of bad experiences with Captain Transporter (both as buyer and seller), and wouldn't recommend them. It seems they contract their freighting out to other companies, so you're at the mercy of whichever freight firm they happen to put your bike on.

Make sure you get insurance. Best transport cover I have had was through Aon Insurance Brokers. Much cheaper than anything else out there.

Yep, I'm finding that out right now.

If I had to transport a bike again, I'd just make a post on KB asking if anyone wanted to ride it up or down the country for you. Pay that person the normal transport fee and then get them a 1-way ticket back home.

Doing it yourself would be best, but if you're a learner rider (like me) you probably shouldn't go open road.

For example, I'm paying $350 for transpro to send my bike from WLG to AKL. I'm sure someone from WLG wouldn't mind $350 for a whole days work (hell, it's not really work is it!). Instead, the bike has been sitting at the transport company's depo for 10days (so far) and I'm going absolutely insane.

    Damn I'm stupid.

Being out of work I would say yeah i,m available to help out for ya on this one.

However if i couldn't get someone to ride my bike my first and only call would be to biketranz lets face it they only do bikes yep they cost abit more but its kinda like having a Honda mechanic work on your bmw sure they can do the work but what about those lil things that matter.
Also I have been told that most of the biketranz peps ride i would much prefer someone that knows bikes pushing my baby around than some folklift.

While we're on the subject of transporting bikes throughout the North Island. I make 8 return trips between Papakura and Wellington each year (at least).

Anyone wants a bike transported either way on an open trailer, the cost is 240 bucks. It's a non stop journey for me so your bike's not sitting anywhere unsupervised overnight and you don't have to worry anout someone you don't really know riding it.

    Just a thought.

Nope. Believe me, I'd prefer not to tow a trailer from Auckland to Wellington and back over a weekend. But is someone wants to pay for my gas, I'll do it.

The reason for bagging a particular bike transport company is because they're friggen useless and have no customer service what-so-ever.

Just so you know, I would ride my bike up to Wellington myself if I hadn't bought a plane ticket a month before getting the bike.

As of two days ago Jeffs was looking pretty good for a depot to depot delivery, but since then I like the reccomendation by Dogsnbikes for Strait Shipping (www.strait.co.nz) as I'm on a tight budget.

Zuki lover said earlier said that Conroy removals (www.conroy.co.nz) was good, but their prices are quite expensive (THE most expensive at $370.00 Chch to Wellington) and I was also told by them that, "In respect to transit insurance, you would need to arrange this directly with your own insurance company."

I'm looking into another company that my brother used for $150, but he said the guy didn't put padding between the tie-down and the bike so some of his paint was scratched. Luckily it was just a project bike, but still not good. I'll post more on that later.

I decided to go with A - H Freight (call John on 0800434654, but he's really busy) as he was by far the cheapest. He went out of his way to help me out and even kept it in his garage for a couple days until I had a chance to pick it up. No damage or anything to the bike, it had a bike blanket over it for the entire trip.
His main business is for transporting furniture, but he also does bikes if they're unregistered. This worked really well for me as I'd bought an unregisterd CBR250RR that I've now done up and runs amazingly!

IMO, we get what we pay for. As is very common in human-to-human interactions.

Biketranz cost more because they are better, safer, reliable and accountable.

No I don't have shares in their business. Yes over a decade I have used different motorcycle shippers for inter-island moves.
