How do I check the oil level?

I own a Honda CB250Y and i was wondering what the correct way to check the oil level is? Do you screw the dipstick all the way back in or not. Do you put bike on side stand or centre stand or just have it on a level surface to check.

If you can answer any of these questions it would be greatly appreciated.

Level surface and upright. You should be able to just hold it upright and check,no need for stand of any type.

While a commoner such as yourself may refer to the engines fluid as plain old 'oil', Honda owners who respect the mechanical brilliance of their precision engines like to call it 'engine blood'. And it's not a oil change, it is a transfusion.

Heres a thought.Go buy a new filter and oil and have a look on the casing near the dipstick and it should have oil quantity stamped on housing and do a oil change with the recommended amount. Then run bike for a while and let settle. Then check the level for future knowledge of the pefect correct level.

Now you have new motor protecting oil and filter cause the last owner may have been lazy bastard.
