Because the Baord is not elected..............and the Wanganui Council have no say in the final decision. You wold need to make this a electroal issue as the Board reports to the Minster of Land. I'm not without sympathy on this but due to the fact that both the main parties arfe going to need maori support to govern, Ii do not see any minister changing the Act for local beneifit nor do I see them resorting to the 'removal' of the H in Wanganui.

Like I said I have sympathy on this but nothing in heaven or hell is going to change the Board's decision.

Laws is making himself look silly. He has such a big ego that it blinds his common sense.

I certainly wouldn't argue with you over the ego thing. However, I stand fast on the signage thing and if I lived (or frequented) Wanganui I'd be out there reinstating signs myself and removing the 'h' or covering it, whatever, until due process is complete.

I could not agree more. But what are you going to fight with. As I said the Geographic board is responsible to the Minister and the political relaity in NZ at the moment is to cater to Maori. So no Government is going to change the existing decision by the board. Like it or not tha's just the way it is. W'anganui is a lost cause. Anything else and you may as well head butt a wall. It will achieve exactly the same outcome.

Big ego ? I wouldn't disagree either, but you are forgetting Michael Laws NEEDS a big ego to be able to survive in politics, it is a necessary evil of such positions.

His ego gave him the drive to succeed, and not back down.

    Who want's a wimp running a city?

Gosh, why do you think Don Brash got the arse from National?

Ew, who want's a nerdy geek with a mail order bride for a Mayor, let alone a PM?

I would rather have a slightly egoistic person running a city than Don Brash!

The important thing to consider is a politition egoistic, or a narcissist?

    There is a big difference.

Egoism is self serving, but that trait does not stand in the way of common good, nacissism does.

If I was living in a New Zealand city that had similar problems to that which Michael Laws inherited, I would not hesitate to vote for him, not even for a second!

All this talk of his comments regarding sterilisation is a little naive......it's simply to a controversial comment, designed to bring the social problems faced in the town to public attention.

I am 100% certain that Michael Laws knew that this would bring out the irrate PC freaks, and bring himself negative publicity, but what's in the news????? Oh, that's right, "LTSA changed the spelling of the town", just think about that for a second...... Wanganui has gang, drug and child abuse problems at a disproportionate level to that of most of New Zealand, and is doing everything he (and his council) can do, to, at the very least, discourage at risk youth form joining the ranks, and all the papers care about is the fact that he exercised his power to "work to rule".

My god, imagine being Michael Laws right now, I suspect he has to have 24 hour security around his home (incase no one knew, gangs in New Zealand occasionally kill people, and, even more frequently bring them, or their family's harm)

As far as I am aware, Michael Laws is the most pro active Mayor (as far as championing the best interests of his community regarding organised crime and intimidation.) I assure you, I would personally not feel confident to make the stands he makes, and I am physically bigger and younger than Mr Laws.

I am certain Michael Laws does not need this job, he has other financial interests, and after 2 terms in Parliament, a healthy pension, and world travel perks.

I wonder, what would happen if Mr Laws "packed it in" next local body election......who would take his place, and, what, if anything would a new Mayor do to continue the fight against organised crime in Wanganui?

What do the local Police in Wanganui think of Michael Laws I wonder.....no way of knowing really, but I suspect, by in large, they would feel that they (at the very least) have an ally in him and his council..... so many elected officials pander to the PC needs of offenders, (in particular youth), and we all hear stories fro the cops of how so many police resources are wasted on at risk youth when they are young offenders, only to have no support from local officials when it comes to things such as restorative justice.

I suspect such a thing (restorative justice) is a big thing in Wanganui.....trying to give these at risk youth some pride in their community (H or no H), so that the things Michael Laws says and does now, will still be remembered in the years to come, not because they where contraversial, but because they made the community stand together.

I just think that if any of us somehow found ourselves in Mr Laws seat, we would crumble under the pressure of office that a town like Wanganui has.

I don't think we need to worry about putting the "H" in Wanganui, I think we need to worry about getting the "P" out!

No, that is what unintelligent brain dead simpletons will think.

Those of us that look at the big picture see it differently.

I see Michael Laws as a Politician who acted with the will of his community, not against, like most of the world.

So why worry about the "H'?

If this thread is any indication of the collective mindset shared in WHanganui my last comment on the matter [before unsubscribing] would be that WHanganui throughly deserves law's.

Maybe they want him too. Which is why they voted for him, rather than you.
It's only when you take the piss out of a partially shaved wookie with an overactive 'me' gene and stapled on piss flaps that it becomes a problem.

His ego did not help him in National Politics.

Ego has nothing to do with ambition.

In fact Ego has more in common arrogance.

If certain people want the business owners and residents to pay for an H in Wanganui then those certain people should pay for it too...why waste more tax and money on whining and winging and gimme attitudes!

Because you have to keep the whiners happy. If you keep ignoring them, they'll go away. And nobody wants that. (!)

On this point Skyrider, I am sorry to say, but I feel that you are really "behind the eight ball".

"Ego has nothing to do with ambition", that, quite possibly would be the most ignorant comment I have read from you. (not meant as a personal attack there Skyrider)

    How does that work?

    Think about it.

Like me, you post your (sometimes) informed opinion on this site. People agree with you, and people don't.

When people post their opinion to the opposite of yours, you maintain your opinion.

There are 3 things requiring an "ego" in this example.

    1) Form an opinion

    2) Air your opinion in a public forum

    3) Maintain your opinion against others who don't agree.

If YOU (or I) han NO ego, then we could not take even ONE of the three steps I outlined.

When an "ego" gets so big that you cannot accept others opinions (or sometimes reality), and you are motivated to pressure (manipulate) others into "thinking your way", then this is a sign of "Narcism".........(well, one of many signs)

Michael Laws a big ego? Yea, that's quite likely. Narcissic? Not really. A Narcissist is unlikely to be a Mayor of a small town who tries to help his community AND supports their wishes...... Most likely the biggest ego (and Narcissist) in Wanganui is going to be the leader of the strongest gang, who does it all for money and self gratification, followed by the control it gives him.

Ego has EVERYTHING to do with ambition, and I would go so far as to say that with-out some level of Egoism, "ambitious, driven" people would fail to exist.

Sigmond Freud even wrote that Egoism was a "healthy trait required for normal development"

I am unsure if you are intimating that you have "no ego" Skyrider, because of you did (have no ego), you would most likely be the only person in the world with-out one!
