New cellphone law?

I was hoping someone could settle a debate i'm having with my flatmate about this.

My arguement is that if i come across a drunk driver while i'm driving would it be iilegal for me grab my cell and call *555 and report it while i'm following the driver directing the comms person to relay it to the patrol cars till they reach the drunk driver.

My Flatmate says i should remember the rego and pull over and report it then. I fear that doing this and losing sight of said driver that i can't see where they are going and they will most likely get away and even worse kill someone or themselves. In which case i'll wish i could have done more to try to prevent it from happening.

Yes i understand that my driving while on cell to cops could also pose a risk to others. I've been in this situation before a couple of times and in those cases while i was on phone to police i had my hazards on warning other drivers that there was a hazard in the immediate area

Have you been in this situation before and what have you done?

Also I'd like to have some feedback from any cops regarding this please

If you are the only occupant in the vehicle, it would be prudent to pull over to use *555.

At the moment *555 and 111 calls are given leeway. That leeway evaporates when you get a ticket and 20 demerit points for driving and using your cellphone.

Cars should be wired so's a cell-phone being used in them will cut out the ignition - sorted.!

I recall reading something on this. Under the circumstance that you have quoted you would not be charged.

I'm not too sure if this is in the legislation or not..................

So you're allowed to use your phone if you pull over right... Must one switch the engine off? If not, then are red lights fine? Seeing as motorcyclists like to view the cars as 'parked', making it legal to filter to the front of the lights.

From what I under stand, the only time you can use your phone while in your car, is if there has been a accident and you are stuck in traffic not able to go anywhere, for a while.
No while waiting at Red lights.

It's vague.

The last communication I saw was "emergency calls such as 111 or *555 would be yadda yadda yadda"

But then all the other communications I've seen say that *555 is to report stuff only, and that you should use 111 in emergencies.

Take your dialling finger and stick it up the arse of *555. Use the triple 1 if it's an emergency or pull over and pull one off.

It has been put into the legislation, that if you are the sole occupant of a vehicle then you are allowed to dial *555 and 111. So in that situation, you could go ahead and do it no worries.

If you have a Bluetooth phone there are hands free kits in the $20 range available.

I can ride my bike for hundreds of K's and not worry about my cellphone, when I stop for a break, then I check me phone.
Cant figger why people in cars can go 100meters without have to ring or text someone.

Its like a drug, some just can't do without there phone, feel naked without it.

Your right there with that last comment - its even the same when the phone goes flat

Just report the rego number, they know where its supposed to live. Or, when you tell them where you are, they will have a start point to start looking for it.

Hands free kits will come down in price. Most phones come with a simple hands free kit anyway.
