Manhood and Philip Island - spoiler

OK - I've just finished watching the Australian Moto GP and, besides the mechanics of racing (of which I know bugger-all) the sheer DIFFERENCE in the attitudes of Rossi and Stoner couldn't have been more highlighted in the post-race wrap-up interviews ...........

Whereas Rossi's attitude was "Ok, I tried to win and I didn't ... we'll have another go in Malaysia... "

Stoner was all "yeah, the track was slippery and I made a couple of mistakes - not many - and Rossi caught up to me ......there were three seagulls on the track so i had to slow down and so he caught up ............" the gist of all this being HEY AREN'T I GREAT I HAD ALL THESE PROBLEMS AND I WON ANYWAY AND THE ONLY REASON ROSSI CAUGHT UP TO ME WAS BECAUSE OF THE SEAGULLS ...

sorry - i know i live here and all --- and Stoner is a great rider, no question .......... but i can't help thinking that he's a damn poor winner and has the typical arrogant, whiney, attention-seeking attitude that makes so many australians so easy to despise.

Rossi has never been a poor loser ....... but Stoner is definately a poor winner
and a poor excuse for a man.

what the,you must have been watching a diffeent interview than me...he said they had problems with rear tyre grip but it seems everyone else is,a great result considering the problems we have had this year and good to see they could build from Estoril.Despite what Rossi said you could see he was trying they were both doing HUGE rear wheel slides round southern loop.It is also obvious that Casey is not particularly comfortable with the media in his face all the time.Anyways big Kudos to him I reckon, its good to see an Aussie champion who ISNT brash and cocky.

    nah
same interview but [note my disclaimer] we obviously picked up on different things

---------- f'rinstance - you missed the inference about the seagulls .... and also, in the Rossi interview, that Rossi SAID he was trying

I said nothing detrimental about Stoner's riding (am in ab solutely NO position to) only his attitude .........
once again, we saw things differently, YOU saw someone you could excuse as 'uncomfortable with the attention' - I saw a whining, whinging, self-agrandising poor-winner eager to put across the impression that the only reason Rossi was able to catch him was because of act-of-seagull.

it's not as though this is the first or only time he's displayed this attitude.

the only excuse i make for him is that he was born and brought up australian .... and whinging/feeling hard done by/being less than magnanimous in victory and playing the victim in defeat seems to be(from my own observation while living here) a national trait.

Are you saying he actually said he slowed down for some seagulls in the post race interview?

What should a gratious winner say after being fastest all weekend then convincingly beating their main rival? - twice in a row after a couple of months off the bike due to a crippling illness no less....

well no ........... in the post race interview he said he'd slowed down for some seagulls during the race ...... juxtaposed, as it was, with his remark about Rossi catching up to him, the inferance was that Rossi could only DO that because he [Stoner] had had to slow down

what COULD he have said? mebbe something, like Rossi, about it being a good race ...........

but no - magnaminity and graciousness was obviously beyond him

But it wasn't a good race so Casey's not the type to lie about it (like I said he just states how it was). Rossi didn't push him at all. He slowed down almost a second a lap and Rossi still couldn't make a pass on him.

If they'd traded places and it'd been a big battle I'd fully agree with what you're saying but Stoner whipped Rossi's butt.

But yeah he could use some media coaching so people don't get the wrong idea about him (as Lorenzo obviously did as he's been coming across much better in the second half of the season).

Love how she brings a bunch of her hot friends to cheer for Casey from pit lane. No wonder he's so fast... "I'm coming girls I'm coming!!!"

    Yeah right!

For Rossi the choice was risking a bin to challenge Stoner for the race win, or to follow close and be in a position to win if Stoner binned or to pick up a safe twenty points for the championship in the event Stoner didn't bin.

    Gee, tough choice.

I read a good article on top riders and how that very arrogance is part of what makes them so good. They need to have it to a point to win, that 100% self belief that they are the very best. Also, can you imagine trying to contain an ego after just completing one of the most adrenaline inducing acts on the planet (riding a motogp bike in a race).

The poor old modern racer has to be a stunning natural talent, a PR expert, Fitness Fanatic and have a degree in political science to navigate the bullshit. I could imagine nothing worse than having loads of reporters shoving a micro phone in your face and telling you to talk about yourself, especially if same said reporter had been constantly fucking your arse with their ignorant bullshit for months prior (stoners over training exhaustion, which incidentally, I believed him all the way)

I think a lot of fans are not quite aware of just how larger part psychological warfare plays in this game. It matters not that Stoner is not pressuring Rossi for the championship, Stoner is just thinking about the next race, and is reminding Rossi, there will be no seagulls to help him out next time.

Stoner is not my favourite rider by a long chalk, but motorcycle racing is not for mealy mouthed nancy boys/girls needing to be socially accepted either.

(btw Rossi is the best on all levels, and is a Pr maestro, and also a total freak, so he is excluded from the above!)

Agree, if they dont really really really beleive that they are the best they never will be. Couldn't stand Fogarty in his day but there no denying his talent has a rider, the quiet, driven riders, Wayne Rainey, are a bit fewer these days....
