Point Duty is a lost art in New Zealand. Once upon a time, there were lots of coppers on point duty and some of them gave quite spectacular shows.
I used to live opposite the road that went down to Canterbury Court in Christchurch and there was often a pointsman on duty when a big show was on. One sunny summer afternoon we were all sitting out on the front verandah (somewhat errrmmm "enhanced" shall we say) watching this dude really putting it on with the traffic. One of my crazy mates went out and presented him with a flower to wear as a token of our appreciation of his entertaining show. He was a little taken aback at first but ended up sticking it in his buttonhole eventually....
