Purchasing DVDs from Amazon?

I'm getting my A into G for Xmas with a bit of early shopping. Going to buy some books and CD's from Amazon, but have never bought any DVD's before. I'm not up with the zoning issues and whether US DVD's are playable down here. We've got a pretty up to date DVD player (2 year old). Do they automatically detect and compensate these days?

Ours does. For what that's worth. It's a long way to come to play your DVDs, but I'd trade Scotch for a ride on the Striple...

Most players in NZ are set to multi-region. Ask in the shop, or find some out-of-region DVDs from mates & try them. Or surf up your make & model & try to find the remote-code to multi-regionify it. There's only one player for the planet, so the makers just set them in software using the remote...

Also be aware that computer DVD-player programs can get uppity about changing the region. Easy to do in the software, but sometimes you only get a few chances.

I've never had a problem playing zone 1's or 3's or 5's.

Also never had a problem ordering DVD's off Amazon, bloody quick service, faster than some purchases off trademe.

Many, but not all DVD players sold here are set for zone 9, which effectively means the player ignores the zone code on the disc. Any player that is set to zone 4 can be re-set to zone 9. There are heaps of websites dedicated to hacking the codes - Google is your friend. This is a good one, but no longer free (as it once was). Most hacks just involve a seemingly bizarre series of button presses on the remote control.

Thanks all - worth the risk (low, it seems) as there are some good buys to be had with the FX being so good at present.
