Question Rear tyre pricing - Battlax?

Need to replace the rear on my 98' GSX 750 F.

Update: I am going with the BT45 from Pit Lane at around $240
    Thanks for the advice.

$240 for a rear? And you want cheaper?
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

I have a battleaxe on the front but was horrified by the $240 price tag of a rear.

Does anyone know anything about Shinko tyres? - 17X120/80R280 SHINKO 280 120/80-17 T/L REAR V RATED - $140.84 Free delivery

Or is it going to be as bad as my 'Kenda' Surprise at the moment?

EDIT: Oh wait, "Next Shipment due 5/06/2010" Grrrrr @ bits4bikes.co.nz
    Any recommendations in chch?
$240 for a rear Battleaxe? That is cheap.

$140 for a Shinko? Not at 1/10th the price.
    Time to ride

Argh, what the hell, bits4bikes also has the rear tyre size listed as 120 - bahaha, hence the cheap price.

$240 for a rear Battleaxe? That is cheap.
Ok sweet, I'll probably go with that price I guess.

How many kays do you get out of a battlax? I don't think the battlax is a multi-compound tyre. You might get more miles out of a more expensive tyre, therefore cost per k becomes cheaper (esp. if you have to pay for a fit and balance). PS: Nothing wrong with a battlax. We have the BT45 on the VTR250 and they are a nice grippy tyre with lots of life.

I have a BT021 front matched with a Conti road attack rear, naughty I know but the profiles are spot on. Cycletreads recommended the pairing when a bridgestone rear was unavailable. No problems wet or dry. The front has 5-8mm chicken strips, none on the rear. If anything the conti has a bit less outright grip than the bridgestone IMHO but this only manifested on a very wet road with to much provocation from me.

You would be just fine with a mix of brands - no problem.
Most tyre manufacturers pay attention to making sure that their rear tyre is compatible with other brand fronts.
This is because the rear normally wears first, and they want you to be able to match their rear with the front you already have.

Most people find the limit of the rear earlier than the front- mostly because we all know we have a better chance of saving the rear if we do !

I got 20,000km out of my BT45, just thinking of replacing it now......so as for a long lasting tyre I think they are great, but that depends on how hard you ride I guess

    After I sold my GN250 I bought a ZZR400
It was pretty tired and the tyres on it were stuffed.
I replaced them with Shinkos - forget the model but they seemed to perform OK for a bike with limited power. Suspension was pretty shagged anyway.
About a month later I had a nail in the rear and it had to be replaced.
Only tyre I could get at the time in the right size was a Metlzer which at $300 cost more than a pair of Shinkos.
The performance difference was like night and day.
Where before the gutless 400 could spin up the rear the Metlzer stuck like glue.
Turn in was improved and the bike became more pleasant to ride (it was still a pile of dung but although you can't polish a turd you can stick a flag in it).
I sold the bike and moved on to a bandit 600 but the crappy Kwaka taught me that tyres are a big difference maker and spending an extra $100 or so at each end is a good investment.

The BT45 IS multi-compound, harder in the middle, softer on the sides. Great all-rounders, raced on 'em ( in all weathers ) myself - and that pricing is SHARP

Most people i asked were over $200 for a rear BT45. Then i asked Waikato Yamaha and they were much cheaper

    100/90x16 $139.00
    130/90x16 $185.00

    Overnight delivery as well.

Could just be cheap because of the size though.

I've got BT45's on my XJ, they were the almost universal recommendation when I was looking. Compared to my old tyres they turn great, stick great even in pissing west coast rain, and they kept me on the summit road the other night in the rain/hail/wind (sorry, couldn't resist that one )

How is the bike looking by the way.....
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

B45s rock , pegs down in the rain on a piece of shit z440 some years ago when they first came out . 150/70 17 is right for 750f , definitely worth the dollar .
