Well its a year down today, and yesterday for the first time ever Grub completed the Capital 1000k Cruise ... in total style I must say .. as a pillion on my bike.
Last year when Grub came off I said to Mom "thats the last bloody time hes doing that ride" unfortunately that would be true. But to ensure that he completed it once on two wheels I took the opportunity this year to do the ride myself - Elle-F thought it was a great idea and decided to come with me.
Instead of one day we did 700 odd on Friday - stayed in Tokaanu with a few bitches that night, and rode the last 300 odd the next day. What a bloody ride. (pics to follow).
The first day up early and off after a hearty breakfast. Only got slightly lost going through Fielding - but that was cool ... and up tyhe paraparas to Taumarnui for Lunch. Both Elle and I were feeling good ... and after feeding oil checks etc we headed off for Te Kawa. I had no idea how bloody far up country we were really going ... but some absolutely beautiful roads. Grub managed to keep quiet for once on a ride and stayed nicely tucked up in the pack rack.
We had two options from there and choose after taking local advice to take the shorter route. And thank goodness for that the signposts were all there when we went through ... before the next riders on Saturday someone had used their car to give the post for one road a lie down (it wasn't us) ...
Sweeping roads and Western Lake road down to the rest stop for the night.
Sunday first leg of 6 kms to find breakfast and then a total dawdle home. Back here by 2.30 and for the first time since it started Grub had completed the 1000 k cruise.
It was a great ride, and thanks to those who supported me on it ... and who have also supported me for the past year.
Today we head off to scatter Grubs ashes from the Paekakariki lookout - just happens to be on his absolute favourite road - he was wonderful .. and will never be forgotten ...
