"Registration" or "licensing"?

Just wanna try and clear something up - these ACC levy increases, are they affecting the REGISTRATION or vehicle LICENSE?

Cars are more expensive by the CC to register.
Bikes aren't. a 250cc bike costs the same as a Goldwing.
This is when the vehicle is first put on the road - get number plates etc.

Vehicle LICENSING is what most people mean by saying registration. That ongoing yearly expense.

It's re-licensing. As you said, registration is what people commonly miss-call it. But no, the acc levey is part of the re-licensing fee.

The terminology is not important in this context. Both attract the ACC levy in equal amounts.

When you pay to re-licensing your vehicle you'll notice a break down of your payment on the receipt. Part of the fee that you pay is the ACC levy.

The ACC levy is not part of the re-licencing fee per-see, you just pay it at the same time.

And neither will you for any size bike. Only the ACC component makes the difference.
And just to demonstrate what some people are confused about...the fee breaks down currently
Licence fee $24.50
Acc Levy $252.69 )which will become $511 or $745)
Other levies $1.64
Admin $6.72
Gst $35.69 (which will rise to $49 or $70)
Total $321.24 (becoming $611.85 or $875...ish)

When it comes to time to relicense your car, you don't pay (in total) any more for CC's. Currently the same with your bike.

You DO pay more for more CC's when you initially REGISTER your car.
You DON'T pay more for more CC's when you initially REGISTER your bike.

I may be a bit behind the game, but I've just got a niggling doubt that ACC is upping the levy in the REGISTRATION, not the licensing.....

And its no good going through media releases, we all know that media reporters have no idea what the facts are

Nope. It is the yearly levy that they want to increase. Of course, the initial levy for a first time rego will also go up.

Yes, the first owner of a vehicle registers it so it can go on the road and then every year thereafter it is re-licensed.
There has been a differential in registration fees between different cc rated cars for at least 30 years although I can't think of any reason for there to be a difference. I used to work in the Post Office in Oamaru and did hundreds of these and the work required to do a 1 litre and a 5 litre car was exactly the same.
