Racing for newbies

Hey all,

Me/my wife are looking at getting into racing. Don't have a bike to race on yet, but don't know what to get either.

I have full gear (Qmoto 2 Piece suit, Rev' it gloves, Knox Back protector, HJC Helmet, Good boots (can't remember brand))

I haven't done any track days yet (planning on soon but it's a bit hard with work atm. And i don't particularly want to take my road bike (CBR250) on the track (seeing its my only transport))

So basically I am wanting to know where to start in Auckland. I dont have huge amounts of money to throw around so keeping costs low would also be great

Buckets is a good way to get into it and learn without spending to much cash

Contact the AMCC for details of there meeting at Mt Wellington kart track. A lot of the auckland people come down to HB for our PMCC meetings

Or you could race your RGV in 150 Street Stock

My partner and I both race but we also have many other bikes and cars that need alot of $$ and maintenance along with debt. Last year we did a VMCC winter series as Manfeild is closer, less travelling petrol etc... We choose to both race in Street Stock 150's even though my partner raced and took 2nd place in in next year we could not both afford to race any other class competitively.

Racing is expensive on you wallet and I have seen it hurt relationships in the past when both partners race. Street Stock 150's are alot less expensive than any other class and it is a great development class. We are lucky as 'he' can now rebuild RG's with his eyes closed . There are alot of 2nd hand and aftermarket parts available for them.
Both me and my partner are not big on the whole 'image' thing so we drive round in an awesome old school white van that we can sleep in and pack the bikes in. Our bikes could certainly have taken the prize out for "most ugliest displayed team" and well I am not going to start on 'his' boots... we were there to race not win supermulletmodel of the year!

Last year a set of tyres lasted me all season and will keep going. My partner got 2 years out of his but lets not mention that... I spent about $900 at the beggining of the year on a rebuild of my bike but other than entry fees, licencing, petrol, food, accomodation, tyres, oil etc etc its really cheap!!

I could go on for hours but really I do highly recommend it and I also recommend starting out on a cheaper bike in a class where you can learn lots. It's worth saving for 6 months and racing for 6 months just to get that buzz!!!

like jaosn said, get a bucket {about 800 $1000} and go racing, if you go on the AMCC website you can call john conner the bucket racing guru.

Or you can come to streetstock 150 which is abit more expensive, just depends on what you like. -max

Ah yes, Bucket racing is awesome too! Me and my partner share my FXR to race and I commute on it during the week. Cheaps as au!

it sure is, my first bucket was $500..and if i wasnt young and wanting to be compeditive i would of kept it and still raced it.......now thats cheap for a heck of alot of fun!!!

In buckets it can be expensive to be compeditive{in auckland anyway} because most of your compeditors will have {fxr150 or similar,another set of rims with wet tires,slicks,mods ect..} but if you just want to have fun and tag along at the back of the back its dirt cheap!

In some cases ss150 is cheaper than buckets....as a rg150 is normanly cheaper than a fxr150....

Come along to Puke this weekend if you're after a bit more speed than the classes the others have mentioned. I'm #277 in F3, come and find me and ask all the questions you want. My bike cost me $2500. To race for a year - say 12 meetings, would cost me probably $3000 all up. The key is to try and get someone else to cover as much of that cost as possible - sponsors are you out there?
But mate, be warned it is seriously addictive

Once you start racing, you'll find the $$ you need to get out there each round! Go hard!

Exactly what has been said above. As you build up your confidence the more and more you get out onto the track and your money can eventually be stretched a little further as time goes on then you yourself will know what bike you can eventually move up to if you ever decide to persue your Racing to the next level.
I am a great believer in starting at the bottom of the ladder to see how things pan out and then moving up the ladder as things allow you too.
I guess it doesn't matter what you Race just the feeling off being out there amongst all the other Riders who have the same passion is an Awesome experience.

On the serious note get involved with your local club for you it will be AMCC...they are a great bunch of people. Go along to club nights and talk...talk...talk...network. There is so much knowledge and experience there to assist you and point you in right directions. AMCC do a wide range of training so go join NOW....

Like has been mentioned Buckets is also a real cool step into low level racing..again AMCC can help you along these lines. As every racer will tell you they have started at the bottom...raped the overdraft....not eaten because the bike needs something... but have found affordable ways to to both and enjoy it....
