Just saw Campbell live's story on "the most dangerous road in NZ"

It angers me that people are saying its dangerous and things should be changed to make it safer. The road is safe IMHO its the drivers that are the problem. If your going to go 80km around a recommended 55km corner your just asking for trouble. Sure 100 crashes in a 4yr period is bad but the road is not at fault. suggestions that lowering the speed limit wont stop people speeding there i think the best thing is to put judder bars along the stretch where the accidents are happening.

Greys road is perfectly safe as it is. It is bullshit that the road is the problem. NZ drivers are the problem, and mostly those who seek out greys road as a place to "have fun". I know for a fact you could go around many of those corners in a reasonable car at double the recommended limit, but you would have to be competent.

If only NZ had a skills based licence system, similar to that in Finland or such, where you have to be able to control a vehicle before you're allowed on the road. They focus so much on hazards, yet there is no requirement to have the skills to drive a vehicle in the first place.

I also personally find that many drivers take that road far too slowly, tootling round it at 50-60kph in brand new cars. Is it that the brand new super-minis just cant handle corners like older, larger cars? Or is it just the drivers?

I'm not complaining about those that dont feel comfortable at speed, but it has to be questioned as to why they dont feel comfortable, and wether they should undergo some sort of training?

I quite enjoy riding and driving that stretch so judder bars would piss me off.
Once again it's not a bad road it's bad drivers.

Its Grays (not Greys) Road in our beloved city of Porirua and its already had the bloody lowered speed limit treatment and also years ago it had the cut put through to take out the curves of Motukaraka Point.

I don't get these people that keep wanting roads straightened. Even driving a car on such abominations as the M roads in Pomgolia is no fun. You have to concentrate with a tunnel vision view of the car in front. You never see the scenery and its bloody tiring I can assure you. So bike or car (or woman haha), give me curves any day.

Ridden and driven that road plenty of times, and I agree it's the drivers/riders fault if they crash - not the road. It's not like the corners jump out from behind a bush. (Visibility of other traffic is even pretty good most of the way.)

The trouble is that the drivers/riders can't be educated, so the road gets messed with instead. People sometimes need protecting from themselves. Don't know if I like judder bars - though I've got no better suggestion.

If the road is already considered dangerous, then why would you want to make it even more so with judder bars?

Nice curves, no hills to speak of, so really a very easy road - leave the fricken thing alone I say.

The cops were cruising that road on Monday. One had to follow me at 70 instead of the posted 80 - then he dropped back and snapped a cage going the other way

so I was off to have fun

The road has some really neat corners that encourage fast cornering speeds - that must be why there are so many motorcycles on it.

I saw the big outrage article in the Dom Post on the front page.

I agree on the driver education thing, most crashed there are really probably due to imcompetence.

There's a difference between unsafe roads and unsafe drivers. Roads are inert. Drivers can be too -- particularly the ones who are threatened by corners.
