What's a good chain for my R6?

Just wondering what a good replacement would be for my chain on my Yamaha R6. I want a mid quality so as not to break the bank. My dealer was quoting $500 including chain, front and rear sprokets, chain and labour. Is that about right (just bought this bike and know little)

If you are in Wellington try the boys at Motomart good guys that know there stuff but that price doesnt sound over the top.

While I sympatise with your cost saving concept, you must of course realise that the more and more people buy parts from overseas (and in the process saving heaps), the more expensive the parts in NZ will become, because even though the dealers in NZ are selling less, they still have bottom lines to maintain, (let alone increase), and since their (no longer) "captive market" is every day decreasing due to private "importation" of parts, this simply pushes up the costs in NZ to the average consumer.

500 NZ compared to 300, yea, sure that's a big saving, however, that's one more unit the distributor in NZ does not sell, and therefore, the lost margin they wold have made on that item will now have to be passed on to the other items, to ensure the distributor stays in business in the future.

have you noticed the prices in NZ have got higher, as the number of internet based sales has increased?

The old argument with buying overseas.If the prices keep getting even higher than now they will lose more sales, and a lot of the time it is less hassle to order from the other side of the world and quicker.If you have plenty of money and don't need to watch what you spend good on you.

DID, absolutely the best chain. You have to weigh up whether you want quality and longevity or price. Same with sprockets. Buy local and keep our country working. Dont buy off faceless parasites from overseas that contribute nothing to our local economy.

I agree 100%, and its all about relationships, I am just doing a 520 conversion on my race bike, it would be a bit cheaper if I had sourced from the USA but since I have built a good relationship with Pat at Motomart, he has given good advice, a sharp price and the right stuff, what happens if you accidently order the wrong thing? its a possibility. If everyone bought from dealers in NZ prices would come down. Treat the bike industry as a friend not an enemy.

I do agree it's good to have a relationship with your local dealer but im sick of being ripped off by main dealers all the time, and I mean ALL the time. I just took my boat in to a Honda dealer and told then to do a job and they quoted me $80. When I went back to pick it up they slapped me with a $500 bill.

Anyway, I have bought a DID x-Link chain and sprockets through my local Yamaha dealer and they are fitting it all up for $500 including labour. i could have bought the parts overseas but at least I know its original buying from here and if it goes wrong I have somewhere to go back to.

Yes, you have a pretty good example there.
Think of this - what would happen if you hit a slight snag with the whole deal ? In this case, Pat is only a stones throw away, and would certainly ( Pat's one of the many good guys) have advice or help to offer.
Strike the same issue with an overseas supplier, and how do you rate your chances ?
It's all about building relationships that are more than just price driven, and I know plenty of shops around here that offer to do a lot more than just take your cash.
BTW - Pat got you the BEST stuff

JCMotors.com that was mentioned earlier, you wouldn't have any trouble whatsoever. They have more employees in the offices down the side of the showroom doing nothing but customer support than any motorcycle shop in NZ has employees full stop.... and they genuinely care about service.

But Robert in this case it is one in the same.

Since the DID chains are the best quality, they last longer so you are not buying as often.

Honestly, all I ever use is DID chains and AFAM sprockets. If installed properly and lubed every so often they last a hell of a long time.

The biggest thing that eats up chains and sprockets is the 95% of the people out there adjust their chains too tight.
