    Waioeka gorge

well i rode throught the waioeka gorge for the first time on sunday. what a great road. spoiled in places by lashings of gravel scattered on the corners and the occasional rock fall on the road. but otherwise, one of the twistiest roads of been on. almost as good as the isle of skye.........but no gravel there.....all nice n smooth tarmac. anyhoo . i ll be going through there again soon if anyone wants to tag along

Because it see's so much heavy traffic in the summer it gets cut up and then patched and is in genrally poor condition.

Not bad - although I rode through there on the 30/12 and the biggest issue was pools of molten tar in the wheel tracks! There was the usual rock falls in the gorge itself, and a little grit on the climb up to Matawai but not enough to cause serious concern.

the surface is mostly ok, well, gravel on lots of corners made me back off, theres a few gems of nice smooth tarmac bends.not many though. and lots of small stones that have fallen through the retaining fences on the hill side also make for hazards.....but they are only where the tall retaining fences are. its funny, i went through there under or at the speed limit most of the time......i cant afford fines and demerits and it was plenty fun and quite safe i thought....although. plenty of boy racers trying to get a bite outta me for a race...........fuck em. im keen to ride with anyone, particularly experienced riders...ive had 3 years off a bike until last july. let me pick yer brains!
