I don't know if anyone has been following the battle in the U.K for the #1 single on the official top 40 chart. Having the number one Christmas single is considered a rather big deal over there, and the honours for the last five years have gone to the winner of a program called X-Factor, the British equivalent of American Idol complete with Simon Cowell as judge.
This year the winner of X-Factor was considered a shoo-in. The clean-cut winner Joe McElderry sung traditionally syrupy disney pop rubbish equally appealing to teenage girls and grannies. Then a true hero stepped in.
Jon Morter, a 35 year old father of three was fed up with being told what to listen to by Simon Cowell. He starts a facebook page attempting to get people to buy Rage against the Machines' anti-authoritarian hit "Killing In the Name" to prevent another year of schmaltzy pop rubbish taking the number one spot. His campaign is successful.
"Killing in The Name" is the number one Christmas single.
