For getting the 2.2 Billion dollars out of the Ozzie banks. Good to see the big guys paying there way.

Some things are worth dying for, living is one of them.
Yep - they actually owed $2.6 billion - and the IRD could have got more, so, who decided to settle for less - Key & English?
“- He felt that his whole life was some kind of dream and he sometimes wondered whose it was and whether they were enjoying it.”
Anyone else and IRD would have also put a 33% penalty intrest on that too.
Arguing with an Engineer is like wrestling a pig in mud.
After a while you realise the pig is enjoying it.
I'll offer IRD 80% of my tax bill next year too...how ya reckon I'll get on?

It's fairly common in the corporate world which I find somewhat concerning. I was working for a large Telco and it was the norm for large corporate accounts to be 'settled' with a few hundred thousand dollars knocked off the bill. Obviously everyone should pay their taxes in full, but atleast they got some money out of them!

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.
Sure that's not because the telcos can never bill correctly...?
Until I get a discount for early tax payment or just being an all-round nice guy, I think no-one else should either! It's a particularly bad look for this government to be doing favours of this kind to the big banks. Creates an obligation of sorts...
Redefining slow since 2006...
Another good reason to support kiwibank.
As one of the sites ‘fucken lefties I see nothing reasonable or commercial at all. In fact the very opposite. Not only have the banks been found guilty of tax evasion, this govt. has been found wanting by reducing the amount owed. It may have escaped your notice Tank but that is ‘our’ money not the Government’s.
Try getting ‘your’ tax bill reduced after the court has found you guilty of ‘tax avoidance.’
Key bleats on about how he is for New Zealand interests, but to those that can see thru his lies and bullshit on this it is apparent obvious to all but his toadies that he is not. Recently I had to pay a speeding fine and I noticed that Westpac is still the collection agency for the Justice Department
and this is after it has been found guilty of tax avoidance. Rip of the boss and you will soon find your self down the road and rightly so. Bit like screwing your employer for a benefit that you are not entitled to. Or in a more recent case that Bennett leaked to the media, screwing the taxpayer for twenty five years.
That the government still uses Westpac as the collection agency for fines imposed by the Courts is testament that Key and his Government will and never have been committed to the best interests of the decent and hardworking kiwi taxpayers.
As a ‘fucken leftie’ a reasonable and commercial decision would have been designating Kiwi Bank as the Government’s Bank and collection agency for fines imposed by the Justice department. That would have been a ‘decent’ political decision and a ‘just,’ one to boot.

The govt could use some of the 'tax avoidance' revenue.
To give you some idea of how much the Aussie banks have screwed us here is a comparison of the numbers in seconds.
1 million seconds is about 12 days.
1 billion seconds is about 31 years, 8 months, 8 days.
If memory serves me right the courts found for 2.6 billion. I'll let others that are much better at maths than me to work out how much .6 of a billion dollars is other than its a lot of our money someone has given away.
What's your next excuse??

Actually IRD are a bit more user-friendly than they used to be. They now write off penalties and accept reduced offers of settlement provided you can show hardship. They are a lot softer than they used to be. This came about partly because of noise from Rodney Hide and also the Christchurch wally David Henderson who made his own movie about it.
