Cancel the dole after 1 Year

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/poli...r-says-Bennett

After reading the part about someone getting a allowance because "he has a medical opinion saying he has cannabis addiction." and "It was revealed yesterday that the Harris family in Christchurch had received unemployment and sickness benefits for 25 years and recently received special-needs grants from Work and Income to fence their swimming pool and put new tyres on their 2007 Chrysler saloon." i gota say im all for it

What?! You're all for having a cannabis addiction?

    Sounds pretty fair.

Last time I checked Cannabis wasn't addictive - it's a psychological addiction not a physiological problem.

While I think the grants Harris received are a crock, don't those have to be paid back ? So they weren't just a hand out freebie ?

Anyway, I'm all for tightening up on long time beneficiaries (lifers).

They should be under greater scrutiny to demonstrate that they are incapable of working. Sickness beneficiaries also need greater scrutiny - many lifers on the dole progress to the sickness benefit, simply by convincing the Dr they are addicted to drugs.

Addicted to cannabis ? I doubt it very much. Can't be arsed giving it up and getting out of bed in the morning and going to work more like it.

Totally agree. My old neighbours (housing NZ house out this way to try and stop the ghetto thing/instead just ruins good neighbourhoods) were total bludgers. The only thing wrong with them is that they should have been out south auckland with the other polys rather than 'horying' up my area. They spent all their.....I mean our money on booze instead of feeding their kids.

Then there's the flipside....my brother, contributor to society for decades who'd never asked for a handout in his life, harrassed like crazy by ACC to prove this/that and the other....... when he actually had a real entitlement for some assistance; knee surgery, he ended up with a 20cm blood clot...no faking that.
He still had a hard time, trying to prove he was entitled to something. Hell he only asked for 2 out of the 6 weeks salary he could have claimed for.....oh and his doctor told him off for going back to work early.......

I dunno how these cretins get away with what they do...they sure know how to pick on the wrong ones though.

If they can't force him into a drug treatment programme, they should stop his benefit because if he has a cannabis addiction, then he is obviously admitting using the stuff. Currently that's illegal, regardless of anyone's opinion on whether it should be or not, so the police should raid his place on a regular basis and throw his useless arse in prison.

I agree with firefighter - we have paid taxes for 30 years and although I have been on the dole before (for periods no longer than a few months while I was ACTIVELY looking for a job after being made redundant), I don't agree it or any benefit should be an ongoing hand-out. When I had a slow period earlier this year (I'm self-employed) I contacted WINZ to see if there was any assistance I was eligible for. Yes, I may be eligible for an accommodation supplement. I did the calculations online and discovered if I bared my soul and told them all my financial details, I'd get the grand total of one dollar a week. Suffice to say, I didn't bother going ahead with the application!

There are people who are on benefits for short periods of time and don't ever abuse the system, but this family deserve nothing. Years of abusing the system for their own financial gain is nothing to be proud of.

The idea of a grant is you don't pay it back. In some instances it is a loan to be paid back, however, when it becomes so large it can't be paid off they write it off.

On the DPB thing. If you run out of money for food and can prove you have no cash (show the bank statement) then voucher is forthcoming. If the power bill can't be paid a loan to pay back can be obtained - as above when too many of these to pay back they are written off.

The problem is how to cut the payments to lifer bludgers but still help those who for genuine reason or another can't get work.
    Here for the ride.

I guess cutting the dole after one year would be a good idea, make them actually try and get a job, instead of living of my taxes!!

Just be thankful as taxpayers that he didn't claim to have a sex addiction. God only knows what MSD would have been giving him!

Yep - it's that Harris family.

    Bullshit!
Let’s not forget we’re talking about a tiny amount of people. 6654 people out of 60,000 on the dole have been getting it for more than a year. Rather than expending effort and public money in a redundant attempt to look tough by targeting a few thousand people who are already subject to checks to ensure they are entitled to get the dole, Bennett should be working on creating work opportunities for the quarter of a million Kiwis who don’t have work but desperately want it.
