Tyres for my Ninja 250r

Can anyone recommend a half decent tyre brand other than the top brands like Bridgstone and Dunlop. Neither one of my local garages can give me any sort of advice thats usefull.

If you are just a learner, you would be best served to put the manufacturers' recommended tyres on it. These tyres won't be the most forgiving, but you dont want or need forgiving tyres - you need experience.

I have two learner 250 Hyosungs and they have shinko tyres on them. They are fucking horrible, and they skid and dart around in the wet in a super scary manner. So you learn very quickly what you should do and what you should not. It is very clear that any mistakes will be big ones.

When you get on a larger bike, go for the Michelin Pilots etc, and then experience their sure-footedness in the wet and so on, but do the hard yards on the slippery 250 for the moment, and get some experience under your belt.

Having said all that, if you wanted to throw five hundred dollars at a set of Michelin Pilot Road2 tyres, you will be amazed at the difference it made in the wet or dry.

I'd highly recommend going for a cheap but brand tyre. Its so easy to stack on crappy tyres. I agree with Steve that learning on crappy tyres is a great way to prepare you for what may happen in the future, but go with trusted crappy, not scary unknown crappy IMO.
See what your shop has in the way of "Touring/longlife" tyres on a budget, from Dunlop or Bridgestone etc, they're still relatively cheap, last ages, and let you experience slightly safer slippage than a superbudget tyre.

bridgestone bt45's or Pirelli Sport Demon's are popular choices, they are pretty comman sizes and are readly available,

i think Kenda's would be worse than shinko's

The Kendas seem a little cheap (both tyres costing less than a single BT45 rear) although they do seem to have good things said about them. Personally i would feel much safer with BT45's.

Go for the BT45's - great all-round performer, wear well and not too dear.
If you want the extra performance, BT003RS's are the go - we will be running these on both 2fiddy race bikes this season

i have had sports demons on my cbr250r for some time now and have never had them let go. they wear well and are grippy in the wet and dry. and at 175 fitted are cheap as

your stupid getting cheap tyres for "experience", at the end of the day you want to stay alive, ride to the conditions and hazards on the road. if something does happen how the fuk are you going to emergency stop??

have seen so many 250 ninja's bin on the stock tyres get something decent and get more experience by liviing longer enjoying your rides, trusting how your bike will ride in all situations and having a clean non binned motorcycle at the end of the day.

can now report that our stock standard Ninja250 was as fast on 003RS's as a well sorted RG150 on BT39SS's - similar pressures too

These are actually pretty decent in the wet too, so well worth it if you feel you need the extra grip - if not, go for the reliable BT45's and save $'s

and ANYWAY, why the hell would you go to your local garage for advice on something that they obviously have very little or no expertise in - if they DID, you wouldnt have posted on here .......... get to know the guys in your local shops, theres bound to be 1 or 2 who you can get on with and trust
