Tyre repair/replacement in Palmerston North?

Hi guys,

So I was riding up to Palmerston North from Wellington on my little '07 GPX Christmas Eve. All went well and I got here safely.

Yesterday thought i'd take the sprocket cover off and give me chain+front sprocket a good clean as it was looking pretty grim. In doing so I noticed a little a nail in my rear wheel (its always the rear!).

I slowly started to pull it out and to my dissapointment, the hissing of escaping air was heard. "Bugger" I thought as I pushed the nail back into the tyre.

I took off the back wheel and now need to either take it somewhere to get repaired or replaced.

Questions I have are:
-Can I take it to any tyre shop or does it have to be a motorcycle dealer?
-I current am running Sport Demon Tyres so if I need to replace it, i'd like to get another of the same. Will this matter as to where I take it?
-Where in Palmerston North could I take it?

Luckily I have a few days off work or I would have been up shit creek...

Any of the local shops will be able to do it. Not sure which are open during the break - get on the phone on tuesday morning.

While in the bike shop get yourself a tubeless tyre repair kit - well worth the $60 or so they'll sting you for it.

It it's just a nail and the tyre is in good nick then a repair should be fine - no need for a new one.

As a quick fix.......... you could find a screw about the same width of the nail, wind it in and use silicone, then pump it up. Short term fix Only

Cheers, will get on the blower tomorrow then. So AFC, ANZA etc? Should I just be able to take my tyre in and they fix it there and then or will it take a few days?

Was also thinking I really should have a repair kit under my seat just incase. Luckily for me I made it all the way to my destination before having to do anything about it.

Ask I guess. If it's urgent tell them. I've had a puncture repaired (in Whakatane) while I waited when I was on a tour. Should only take 20 mins or so.

Your best bets would probably be AFC, City Honda or Freedom Suzuki. I don't spend any money at Anza.

Ta, will try hit up freedom and city honda then. Need to be back in Wellington on the 31st so hopefully one of those will be open.

By all means, I think the most likely to be open around Palmy will be Anza's and I know they carry decent puncture repair kits (innovations).

I got caught out at Manfeild needing a new 520 chain for my Honda CBR1000RR race bike. I bolted in to City Honda and in my haste I raced, I mean cruised, back to Manfeild with my prize only to find the blardy thing was about 10 links too short (not even close). Race (cruise) straight back in, point out their error and receive another. Fit it up do a few skids and head home.

It was only when I dropped by Motomart that week that they pointed out my new chain was only suitable for a 60hp 120kg chook chaser on dirt not a 180hp 170kg road bike with perfect traction that I realised I'd had a fuggin' lucky escape.

I got my money back next time I went past but it could have been a lot worse than just inconvenient. So I can't recommend City Honda.

After a quick google search I decided to ring Freedom Suzuki as they list on their website they deal Pirelli's (if i needed to replace i'd like to stick with sport demons).

They were open so I took down my tyre.

They guy in the service department said the best/easiest thing to do would be to just chuck a tube in it as to get it properly repaired would cost ~$100 and take a couple of days which I don't really have.

Is this method of repair common practice? I assume it's safe and all?

Am picking up my tyre later today...

ummm. I would have thought the quickest easiest repair would be a dog turd in it. I rode 4000km to the end of a tyre with a dog turd in it. 5 min repair and dont need to remove wheel to do it.
