    Case-modding a Sun server...

Getting pissed off with my sparcstation5 lately - it's limited to solaris 9 and I can't run firefox without the recommended patch clusters, which I can't download as I don't have a premium Sun account.

So, I've inherited the innards from a Sun Ultra2 Enterprise server, a 64-bit beast that will run Solaris 10 and a few other nicer linuxes...

But no case to put it in. I've only got some old PC cases...

and there's one big old HP Pavilion 8208 case and I have an angle grinder. And I'm on holiday. So what's a guy to do?

About an hour later it all fits just beaut. I still need to fabricate a backplate to tidy it all up and find some SCA80 cables as the hard drives need to be rerouted but I reckon she'll be a runner real soon.

    wow... love that new uploader.

And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Nice recycle job. Did those ultra 2s have auxilliary fans? With a lot of open vents / bays, will you get sufficient airlfow over key circuits / chips to keep it cool?

Will see if I have some cables somewhere. The donor machine is still available but it only had one internal drive, the rest were in a fibre attached expansion box. Theres also a DLT drive for that thing.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

The Ultra 2's have two 120mm fans - one blows air over the CPUs one over the RAM. I've positioned the motherboard so that it sucks air from the bottom of the case and blows it up the box. I've cut a massive rectangular part out of the bottom of the case. It should work... I hope.

Hey Pete - you know I'll take whatever I can get mate. Cheers heaps. I have enough drives to sort this thing out thank goodness... SCA80 drives seem to be quite easy to come by.
