You are Maori if you identify as being Maori.
To me that is ridiculous and a step backwards in race relations.
Simply identifying as a Maori is not sufficient to get your hands on any filthy lucre though as you have to show those with their hands on the purse strings of grievance settlements that your whofucked your papa shows lineage to N.Z.'s Adam (Original Man)

Red Haired people is only speculation, their is a myth of scottish/family (red haired) family residing in New Zealand they would of been killed upon discovery, not studied over a period of time. It was until England came over that the Maori took neutral upon visitors.

Errrrr yes the english were crap at fishing.......especially on a 'discovery' vessle. But then again it was only set up to explore and 'scare' pirates. Kinda like having a toyota corrolla that isn't very good at towing a digger. Different tools.
However don't be too naive to think that Maori were "the best". The technique the maori were using was perfected by the chinese about 2,000 years earlier....... likewise the african coasts had some pretty good fishermen.

I do agree about the scottish etc being killed off - but I would think it was a bit earlier than that......say around 1000AD Nordics etc

At the end of the day we are of 1 nation, 1 culture. Right or wrong the maori's got fucked, move on. NZ is bigger than Maori, english settlements and the crown. The only thing holding it back are those who feel that it WOULD be better.........if the world was built on shoulda,coulda, woulda.......nothing would happen
