Brake pads are an easy thing to do. Theres fuck all to do wrong unless you rip a hose or leave something loose.
If you can get some help, definitely do it yourself.

Yes they are, and an excellant way to start someone off on doing their own maintenance.
Just go slow, and think. Don't let your helper do it for you. Do it yourself, and have them advise you.
Probably you will need a meaty set of ring-and-openend-spanners or a socket set. An $80 set will do - you don't need a $400 set, and skip the $29 socket set.

I used to do stuff like this myself, but the last time it was going to cost $80 to buy the pads and do it myself, or $99 for the whole job at pit stop. For $20 I figure its not worth shagging around doing it myself.
