Essential info for the newbies to SASS:
South Auckland Street Skills or SASS

WHAT: Learning and improving Riding Skills
    WHEN: Tuesday Nights
WHERE: Meet at Z (ex-Shell) Service Station, Cnr Great South Road and Taka St, TAKANINI (the one with a Burger King)
WHO: Riders new and old, and anyone getting back into Motorcycling (must be legal & hold a motorcycle license).
Weather and venue permitting - Heavy Rain may mean that we are watching DVDs. Showers are OK, look on the thread for more up-to-date information.
Depending on the number of riders and their experience levels, a short ride may be included to practice further skills. If there are enough riders, some nights can be split into two different groups.

    Some nights may include:
Practicing essential skills and techniques in a quiet carpark
On-the-road practice which may see you doing up to a 1hr - 1 1/2hr ride.

    WHY:
    - Practice essential skills for staying alive on the road.
    - Practical help with your riding.
    - Fun times with fellow riders, with great stories and discussions.
    - Build friendships, solicit advice and pick-up riding tips.

MEET at Z station Takanini -----------> before 6.55pm

    START ride -----------------------------> 7pm

FINISH ride at ex-Manukau City Council car park for slow-speed safety exercises -----> usually 8pm-8.15pm
(next to the new Manukau train station & opp. police station)

SOCIAL time @ BRONCOS after car park exercises -----------> 8.45pm-ish

Cost: Nil, nada, zip, zero, nothing... Just your time and attention.

Details of what will be happening each week will be posted on this thread. So kick the tires and light the fires... Let's ride, aSASSins!

    Disclaimer:
The SASS activity is intended to give any riders advice on their riding and to practice their skills in a safe and relaxed environment. The organisers of SASS are NOT responsible for any rider, their machines and/or any persons involved. All people attending SASS do so at their own risk.

Spokes, made a decision about Track Day Feb 15, decided to go with original plan.
Booking some training with Phil at Riderskills.
I figure that I can improve my riding confidence and basic skills better this way at the moment. I have started again learning to ride.

This will fix up my skills and push me toward my full.
This is the same skill path I discussed with Phil when I did my restricted a few months back. Back then he and I both agreed I had to improve in some areas - and this required I did some on the road k's before I attempted this.

I might have to book a couple of sessions to iron out a few bugs.

Then I will book for my full test and following that after a few months (or earlier) I will do some training about riding a bigger bike.

Then it will be summer and the Xmas rush by then if the Track days are back and advertised earlier enough I will give them a go.

And yes I have been on a 4 lane road with no other cars etc and still been hit (a week ago) by something coming the other way (a starling direct hit in the shoulder-no doubt it didnt fly away) I was going at a fair rate of knots

Would love to! You'll unfortunately lose your cameraman this time round. Although I'll think about stopping by. Might be able to borrow an SLR to get some good shots.

I figure that I can improve my riding confidence and basic skills better this way at the moment. I have started learning to wheelie and drag knee

    knee down, wheelies

Current problems include - changing down while under brakes and includes throttle control at same time - issues
being smooth on the slow down
countersteering - although general cornering has improved a lot. Faster when I hang off.
not difficult stuff, just need some one on one coaching and plenty of practise & a lot of this for not practising

don't want to be practising this stuff with others right behind/around me - had few close calls on my own recently - not very funny
I will be trying to do this at slow speed as when I did this last summer my control improved a lot, lack of riding since then.

And twice now I have played as a dart board for starlings - they don't fly afterwards

and I have been getting my act together to do the NO trip (havent been past Matamata yet)

I have decided having somebody follow you with a camera is very good. Im going to get a helmet mount and if anybody wants vid of their riding I will tape them and give it to them the next week on USB.

Hope Fraser doesnt mind but this is a little of his footage of me, I now see very clearly what Im doing wrong. And why my corner speeds are low.

    Get that knee down!

The rider at 1:18-1:24 looks super uncomfortable. Each to their own I guess...

With a bike like that full revs out of a turn can be a bad thing as it will lead to highsides. You need to get the bike upright before full throttle. And on the straights with the amount of traffic you dont want to end up hitting somebody.

The guy on the R1 was leaning his upper body but not the bike, looked very awkward.
