DR250 running bad with air filter on

hi all , am new to site, having dramas getting my dr to go right, runs ok ( just ) with no air filter but as soon as i put air filter on it is un rideable, have 2 carbs and does the same shit with either carb, have new plug, bike ran onto reserve and next day dramas, have got a good diaphram in 1 carb and still no diff, have pulled carbs apart and cleaned them both, would the float level upset it or not, welcome any thoughts or advice, cheers wazza

    Welcome to the madness.

Suck eggs question here; Your air filter is clean right?

Another thing that can happen is the needles actually "Waste" away over time. You may have the same problem on both needles.
Look for little rings around the needle, where it has been held partial throttle for long periods of time, and been rattling away.

Could well be something else though.

So, what does the needle on the carb slide look like?

Have you got a camra, and can post a "Macro" picture on there?

Have a look under the seat at the ignition module (black box)...I had a similar experience and it was a loose plug connection..... Worth a try before you pull the head off....

Are these air filters oil impregnated? if so there could be too much oil in it blocking the air.

funny, i have a 2004 dr200 with the same problem i think, will idle OK, but wont rev, seems to blow back through carb etc.
    i check exhaust (not blocked).
    plug black etc.
cleaned carb did all the stuff you did.
i ended up pulling the head (gasket = 18 bucks by the way) and removed the valves. two broken valve guides and bent valves. weird.
anyway, i'm still getting parts so i hope the problem is gone when i put it all back together.

It's not the needle valves you need to be checking.

The jet needle that fits into the diaphragm slide wears along with the needle jet that it runs in.

yeah have checked the needle valve and tapped it out and cleaned it, thought ive found it but no, have run a didderent size needle in it and it runs even worse, being a 86 all 2nd hand parts are worn as well, went to suzi dealer today and they sold me a plug dr8es as opposed to the dr7es which was running in it, would the dr7 be hotter than the dr8 ?? , the price of a new diaprham made me lie down on the floor of the suzi shop ( in shock !!) fuckkkk, where to now fellers, can get another carb for 107 off trade me , but already have 2 carbs ????, remember bike went well and ran on to reseve then all this drama started , now havnt been out for a month !!!!!!!!!!!!!! , cheers W
